To soft reset a Huawei phone, restart it without erasing its data: if the screen responds, hold the Power button, tap Restart, and confirm if prompted. If the phone is frozen, use Huawei’s force-restart instructions instead. A restart is not a factory reset.
Restart a Huawei phone from the power menu
Use the ordinary restart when the phone still responds to touch. Huawei’s general instructions are to hold the Power button for a few seconds, then choose Restart and confirm if asked.
- Press and hold the Power button until the power menu appears.
- Tap Restart.
- Confirm the restart if prompted and wait for the phone to start again.
Huawei describes this as a restart, not a factory reset. It does not erase the phone through the reset procedure; however, Huawei’s instructions do not promise that unsaved app work will be preserved.
Force restart a frozen Huawei phone
If the phone is unresponsive or will not turn off normally, use a force restart rather than the menu. Huawei’s general support guidance is to press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds or longer. See Huawei’s general restart guidance.

If holding Power does not work
Huawei documents a different combination for phones running EMUI 11.0 and later: press and hold Power and Volume down together for more than 10 seconds. This combination is not established as universal for every Huawei model or software version. Consult the support instructions for your exact model if neither method works. See Huawei’s EMUI-specific troubleshooting guidance.
If the screen is black or the phone appears dead
A black display can have more than one cause. Huawei notes that the battery may have run out. Connect the phone to a standard charger for more than 30 minutes, then try turning it on again. If it still does not respond, try the force-restart method applicable to your phone. Huawei does not specify a charger connector or wattage on this troubleshooting page, so use one compatible with the handset. See Huawei UK’s black-screen troubleshooting guidance.

If the phone rings or vibrates during startup while the display remains black, Huawei says the screen may be faulty. Persistent symptoms may require service rather than another restart.

Fastboot appears after pressing the buttons
Huawei identifies accidental button presses or a stuck button as possible reasons a phone enters Fastboot. Remove the case, if fitted, and check that the Power and Volume buttons are not being held down or stuck. Then follow the instructions for your model to exit or restart the phone.

The phone still will not start
Back up data in advance where possible, then take the device and proof of purchase to an authorized Huawei Customer Service Centre. Use the support page for your region to find model-specific guidance and service options.

Restart, force restart, and factory reset are different
- Restart: A normal menu action for a phone whose interface responds.
- Force restart: A button-based fallback when the phone is frozen or will not turn off normally.
- Factory reset: A separate procedure that erases device data; it is not needed for the restart steps above.
