Connect the MCP Book Lover server to Claude Code or Claude Desktop, then ask Claude to organize and update a personal book library, track reading, search supported book sources, and work with compatible book files. The project documents a local SQLite library database and a default download folder, but its listed features are project claims—not independently tested guarantees.
What MCP Book Lover lets Claude do
MCP Book Lover is a Python MCP server designed to give an AI assistant tools for managing a personal book library. The project README describes it as “Your AI librarian from Claude or Cursor — track reading lists, get recommendations, search 8 sources, download and convert books with 35+ tools.” Both counts are the project’s own feature claims, not independent measurements.
In practice, the documented capabilities cover several library tasks:
- Organize books: add, list, search, and update entries, including series order and progress.
- Track reading: use statuses including
want_to_read,downloaded,reading, andfinished; write reviews, save quotes, view reading statistics, and track yearly goals. - Choose a next read: request recommendations, including suggestions based on ratings and series reviews. The README also describes Open Library recommendations by author or genre.
- Handle files: convert among EPUB, FB2, TXT, and PDF, including batch conversion, according to the project. Its README claims that conversions preserve chapter structure, metadata, covers, formatting, and inline images; those results have not been independently verified here.
- Move library data: import text in bulk and export records as JSON, CSV, or Markdown.
These are documented tool capabilities, not a guarantee that Claude will perform every task correctly on every book or file. A useful prompt names the action and the book—for example, “Mark The Left Hand of Darkness as finished and save this quote”—then review the resulting record.

Which online book sources it searches
The project lists eight sources: Google Books, Open Library, Author.Today, Knigogo, Searchfloor, LibGen, Flibusta, and Project Gutenberg. Its README says it selects sources based on query language, routing Cyrillic queries toward Ukrainian or Russian sources and Latin queries toward English sources. The README labels some integrations as APIs and others as scraping; source availability and behavior can vary, and no independent uptime or service-quality assessment is available.
The project says it can download books from Searchfloor to ~/Books and find download links through LibGen and Flibusta. A search result or download link does not establish that a book is authorized, available, or appropriate to obtain. Use sources and acquire books in accordance with applicable rights and each source’s terms.

Connect MCP Book Lover to Claude
Claude Code
- Make sure Python 3.10 or newer is available. The project documents
uvxas a way to fetch and run the package without a separate manual installation step. - In a terminal, run the README’s quick-start command:
claude mcp add book-lover -- uvx mcp-book-lover. - Use Claude Code and ask it to perform a library task, such as adding a book or listing books with a particular status. If the server is not available, check that the command completed and that your Claude Code MCP configuration includes
book-lover.
Claude Desktop
The README’s example MCP server entry uses the name book-lover, command uvx, and argument mcp-book-lover. Add that entry to Claude Desktop’s MCP configuration using the configuration location and format appropriate to your installation, then restart or reload the client if needed. The project also documents configurations for Kiro and Cursor.
Install manually with pip
If you prefer a virtual environment, the project documents a manual Python installation workflow. Python 3.10 or newer is the stated requirement; Python 3.11 appears in one example, but is not documented as mandatory. Follow the repository’s installation instructions for the exact commands and client configuration. The README says the server requires no external services or API keys.

By default, the SQLite database is ~/.mcp-book-lover/books.db, and downloaded books go in ~/Books. These paths are useful when locating library records or files, or deciding what to include in your own backup process.
The project documentation does not establish that the database or files are encrypted, automatically backed up, or covered by a privacy guarantee. Treat the database and downloaded books as local data you are responsible for protecting.

What to know before relying on it
- Check results: review changes Claude makes to statuses, reviews, series order, or saved quotes rather than assuming every tool call updated the intended record.
- Expect source variability: the eight integrations are documented by the project, but their availability and behavior are not independently established.
- Keep rights in view: use lawful sources and follow their terms when searching for or downloading books.
- Plan for local data: the default database and download directory are local paths, but the README does not promise encryption or backups.
For the current setup instructions and the complete tool list, consult the MCP Book Lover repository. The package is also listed on PyPI as mcp-book-lover 0.1.6; package versions and publication details can change.
