Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Processing 28 million high-frequency records from outdoor perovskite solar cells, Cristian Carretero Fernández describes a workflow built around disk-to-disk streaming, Parquet storage, anomaly screening, degradation forecasting, and explainable results. He reports that the storage changes reduced processing from hours to minutes and that the final remaining-useful-life model achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) of 4.8 days. Those are results from this project, not independently reproduced benchmarks; the available account does not give hardware, workload, or forecast-validation details.
What the telemetry pipeline needed to solve
The project used data supplied by the ParaSol platform at the Open Solar Stability (OSS) Lab, University of Zaragoza, Spain, and shared with the University of Seville for collaborative research. The platform note identifies a Perovskino galvanostatic MPPT tracker and a calibrated plane-of-array reference cell. Carretero Fernández describes his contribution as the machine-learning layer: data engineering, Digital Twin early screening, T80 survival tracking, remaining-useful-life forecasting, and explainable AI.
At 28 million high-frequency telemetry records, the practical challenge was not simply choosing a model. The data had to be processed iteratively without overwhelming memory, while the analysis also needed to distinguish unusual behavior from degradation and present useful explanations to people making decisions about the cells.
How the data was made workable
Stream from disk instead of loading everything into memory
The author reports using disk-to-disk streaming to avoid memory overflow. This lets a workflow process data in manageable portions rather than requiring the full dataset to fit in RAM. The account does not specify chunk sizes, hardware, or implementation details, so it should be understood as the project’s reported approach rather than a ready-made performance recipe.

Convert the data to Parquet
The workflow converted the raw data to optimized Parquet. The author says the combination of streaming and Parquet changed processing time from hours to minutes. The available account does not define the original storage format, exact task, hardware, or timing method, so the result cannot establish a general speedup for other telemetry datasets.
For this project, the lesson was to begin with Parquet rather than CSV. That is a project-specific recommendation: the best format still depends on access patterns, tooling, and operational requirements.

You can easily configure it from 10 seconds to 24 hours and easily set your own high and low temperature alarm using our free Frigga Data Center software to suit different monitoring needs.
- Multi-Applications: This Temperature Recorder is ideal for medical refrigerator, vaccines, cold chain transportation, fruit storage, lab, etc. Frigga disposable data loggers meet CE, RTCA/DO-160G, UN38.3, ROHS, WEEE, and EN12830 standards.
- IP68 Waterproof Grade: Protective plastic pouch keeps temp recorder dry, eliminating concerns when shipping materials with cold packs, ice, or in damp environments. To maintain IP68 waterproof rating, do not tear open pouch before data download.
How the project approached anomalies and degradation
Map anomalies without labeled examples
For unlabeled hardware anomaly mapping, the author reports combining K-Medoids with principal component analysis (PCA). In broad terms, PCA provides a lower-dimensional representation of telemetry features, while K-Medoids groups observations around representative data points. Together, they can help surface patterns and unusual regions without relying on pre-labeled failures. The account does not provide feature definitions, parameter choices, or a measured comparison against alternative methods.
Track degradation and forecast useful life
For degradation tracking and remaining-useful-life forecasting, the workflow used XGBoost with survival analysis. The author reports a final MAE of 4.8 days. The surfaced account does not state the evaluation split, prediction horizon, uncertainty interval, or external validation, so this figure is a reported project result rather than evidence of expected accuracy in another deployment.

Screen for deviations with a Dual Digital Twin
The early-warning design uses a “Dual Digital Twin”: one twin models expected behavior, while another flags deviations. That structure frames anomaly detection as a comparison between observed telemetry and an expected operating pattern. The available account does not describe the twins’ exact inputs or threshold logic. The author’s practical lesson is to validate thresholds empirically before automating them.
How explanations connected predictions to physical behavior
The author reports using SHAP values to investigate possible failure causes, including whether an alert might reflect reversible environmental conditions such as humidity and temperature swings or permanent structural fatigue. These explanations can help analysts inspect which features contributed to a model output; they do not, by themselves, prove a physical cause. The account presents SHAP as part of the investigative workflow, not as standalone causal validation.

Surrogate decision trees were also added to communicate results to non-technical stakeholders. The aim was to make model behavior easier to discuss in a simpler form, while retaining the richer models for prediction. The author’s explicit lesson is to treat explainability as a first-class requirement rather than an afterthought.

Quick Recap
What other telemetry projects can take from this case
- Design data handling around the dataset’s size. The reported streaming and Parquet approach made iterative work more tractable in this project; benchmark it against your own data, storage, and hardware.
- Separate anomaly discovery from degradation forecasting. The project used an unlabeled anomaly-mapping approach and a distinct survival-oriented forecasting approach for different analytical goals.
- Validate alert thresholds with observed behavior. Do not automate a threshold solely because it seems reasonable; test how it behaves against the system and its environmental variation.
- Plan how operators will interpret outputs. SHAP investigations and surrogate trees were included to help connect model outputs to physical questions and stakeholder decisions.
- Report forecast evaluation with enough context to interpret it. A single MAE is difficult to assess without a test protocol, split, horizon, and uncertainty information.
