A gaming PC needs a processor (CPU), motherboard, memory (RAM), storage, power supply (PSU), case, and appropriate CPU cooling. For demanding modern games, a discrete graphics card (GPU) is normally central to gaming performance. Before ordering, confirm that the exact parts are supported by one another and physically fit together; there is no universal parts list that suits every budget, game, resolution, or case size.

What parts do you need to build a gaming PC?

These are the main internal components. Each choice affects other parts, so plan the build as a compatible system rather than a collection of independent purchases.

  • CPU (processor): Runs game and system instructions. Choose it alongside a motherboard that has the right socket and supports that exact processor.
  • Motherboard: Connects the CPU, memory, graphics card, storage, and other devices. Its socket, memory support, form factor, slots, headers, and connectivity set important limits on the rest of the build.
  • GPU (graphics card): For demanding modern games, a discrete GPU is typically a key part of rendering performance. Intel notes that the GPU uses the motherboard’s PCIe x16 slot and, together with the CPU, directly affects in-game frame rates. Intel’s gaming PC build guide explains the component roles.
  • RAM (system memory): Holds data the system needs to access quickly. Match its generation and configuration to what the motherboard and processor support. How much you need depends on the games and other tasks you plan to run.
  • Storage: An SSD is a common choice for the operating system and games. Match the drive’s interface and form factor to the motherboard’s available M.2 slots or SATA ports. Capacity depends on your game library and budget.
  • PSU (power supply): Supplies power to the system and must have the capacity and connectors required by the selected parts. Intel describes PSU selection as a critical step; use the actual CPU and GPU specifications and manufacturers’ recommendations rather than treating a rough wattage rule as universal.
  • Case: Houses the components and sets constraints on motherboard size, airflow, and clearance. Check its supported motherboard form factors, GPU length, cooler height, radiator and fan support, and PSU fit.
  • CPU cooler and case airflow: The processor needs suitable cooling, and the case needs an airflow arrangement that works with the build. Check cooler height or radiator support and memory clearance. Some CPUs include a cooler in the retail package; others do not, so check the exact package contents.

Will these PC parts work together?

Check compatibility at the exact-model level before buying. A parts list or compatibility tool can flag potential conflicts, but it cannot replace the component makers’ specifications, including BIOS support details.

  1. Match CPU and motherboard support. Check that the motherboard has the processor’s socket and lists the exact CPU as supported. Verify whether that processor requires a particular BIOS version.
  2. Verify memory support. Confirm the RAM generation and supported configuration against the specifications for both the motherboard and processor.
  3. Check case and motherboard fit. Make sure the case supports the motherboard’s form factor and has room for the other chosen components.
  4. Compare GPU dimensions with case clearance. Check the graphics card’s published measurements against the case’s maximum GPU clearance. MSI recommends measuring the graphics card and comparing it with the case clearance in its PC build compatibility guidance.
  5. Confirm CPU cooler fit. Compare the cooler’s height or radiator dimensions with the case specifications, and account for memory clearance where relevant.
  6. Check PSU capacity and connectors. Use the manufacturers’ requirements for the specific CPU, GPU, and other components. Confirm that the PSU provides every connector the selected parts require, especially if the graphics card specifies particular power connections.
  7. Match storage to the motherboard. Check that each M.2 or SATA drive has a compatible slot or port, and that the board has enough connections for the number of drives you intend to install.
  8. Review the whole build. Run the exact part list through a compatibility checker, then verify any warnings against the manufacturers’ documentation. Treat the checker as an aid, not a guarantee of CPU, BIOS, connector, or physical fit.

How to build a gaming PC parts list for your needs

Start with what you want the computer to do, then choose parts that meet that target within your budget. Without a defined use case, there is no sound universal CPU-to-GPU balance or single RAM and storage capacity that fits everyone.

Do you need anything besides the internal parts?

A monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, and operating system may also be necessary to use the computer, depending on what you already own and choose. They are not internal PC build components, so account for them separately when planning the budget.
