Spotify’s US Premium subscribers pay more under the latest price update, but the available figures do not show how much of this specific increase goes to Spotify, record labels, artists or songwriters. Spotify says it pays royalties to selected rightsholders, who then pay artists and songwriters under their individual agreements. Spotify also says it retains about one-third of music revenue to reinvest in its service. The clearest answer is that Spotify and music rightsholders are in the payment chain; an artist’s share depends on streaming activity and contract terms, not a guaranteed cut of each subscriber’s bill.

What are Spotify’s current US Premium prices?

Spotify’s current US pricing page lists these recurring monthly rates. Eligibility, plan benefits and any introductory offer can affect what a subscriber pays and when the listed rate begins. Check Spotify’s US Premium page for current terms.

Plan Listed monthly price Eligibility or account setup
Individual $12.99 One Premium account
Student $6.99 For eligible students; verification and plan terms apply
Duo $18.99 Two accounts for eligible household members
Family $21.99 Multiple accounts for eligible household members

Spotify announced the US update on January 15, 2026, alongside price changes in Estonia and Latvia. The listed prices are recurring rates, not necessarily the amount every subscriber pays immediately if an offer applies.

How does the subscription money reach artists?

  1. Subscribers pay Spotify. Premium subscriptions generate revenue for the service.
  2. Spotify pays royalties to selected rightsholders. These can include the rights holders for recordings and musical compositions. Spotify’s Royalties Guide says those rightsholders then pay artists and songwriters according to their individual agreements.
  3. Rightsholders distribute earnings under contracts. An artist signed to a traditional label may receive a different share from an artist using a service or distribution arrangement. Spotify says traditional label deals typically give labels the majority share, while some other models let artists retain nearly all earnings after fees. Publishing arrangements also vary.

Spotify describes its royalty system as based on streamshare rather than a fixed payment for each stream. A track’s share of eligible listening, listeners’ countries and subscription plans, and the rightsholder’s share affect the royalties. Spotify’s guide explains the system at Spotify for Artists.

What share does Spotify say it keeps?

Spotify Head of Music Charlie Hellman has said the company pays roughly two-thirds of music revenue to the music industry and retains the other third to reinvest in the platform. That is Spotify’s description of its broad music-revenue allocation. It is not an audited breakdown of the January 2026 US price increase, so it cannot establish how the extra subscription revenue was divided.

What do Spotify’s payout figures tell us—and what don’t they tell us?

Spotify reports large industry-wide payouts, but those totals do not isolate the effect of one price change.

  • 2025: Spotify reported paying more than $11 billion to the music industry, an increase of more than 10% from 2024. The company also said independent artists and labels accounted for half of all royalties. These are Spotify-reported company figures, not an estimate of payments caused by the 2026 US price update. See Spotify’s January 28, 2026 announcement.
  • 2024: Spotify for Artists says more than 71,000 artists generated at least $10,000 from Spotify alone, and independent artists and labels generated more than $5 billion from the service. These are Spotify-reported figures for 2024, not measurements of the later price change. See the Royalties Guide.
  • Royalty eligibility: Spotify says that, starting in 2024, tracks needed at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months to qualify for recorded-music royalties. The company said the change addressed about $40 million per year in small payments that were not reaching uploaders and expected the money to be redistributed to eligible tracks. That is Spotify’s account of the policy and its expected effect; it does not show who benefited from the 2026 price increase. Publishing royalties are calculated separately. Details are in the Spotify for Artists guide.

Can we calculate how much of the increase benefits each party?

No. Spotify’s published material does not provide an isolated estimate of the additional revenue, operating profit or rightsholder payments caused by this January 2026 US increase. The overall payout totals and Spotify’s general two-thirds allocation cannot be applied to the new price to calculate that marginal split. Without a disclosure or analysis that isolates the increase, any exact dollar allocation would be speculation.

What can subscribers do if they do not want to pay the new price?

Spotify says it emails affected subscribers and provides a one-month grace period to cancel before the new price takes effect. Its price-update support page explains what happens to an account and the options available. Subscribers can check whether they qualify for another Premium plan or use Spotify’s free, ad-supported service; the plan’s eligibility, features and limitations differ.
