A receipt or order record is the best evidence of purchase age. For a possible build or support date, check the manufacturer’s record using the computer’s serial number or service tag, and report the date exactly as the manufacturer labels it.
Which kind of computer age are you looking for?
“Computer age” can refer to several different events. The dates are not interchangeable, so identify the one you want before looking for it.

How to check when the computer was purchased
Look for the original receipt, invoice, email confirmation, or retailer account order history. These records are the most direct way to establish when the original buyer purchased the computer. If you bought it secondhand, your own purchase record dates your ownership, not the computer’s original purchase.
How to find the serial number or service tag
A manufacturer lookup usually needs a serial number, service tag, or product number. Check the label on the computer first, then consult the maker’s support instructions for the exact model if you cannot find it.

Lenovo PCs
Lenovo lists Lenovo Vantage, the product label, BIOS setup, and Windows command-line instructions as ways to find a Lenovo PC’s serial number. Lenovo Support says: “The serial number is usually printed on the label on the side or back of the product, after SN or S/N or Serial Number.” See Lenovo’s serial-number instructions for the available methods.
Other brands
Use the relevant manufacturer’s support page and search its instructions for “serial number,” “service tag,” or “product number.” The location and steps vary by brand and product; Lenovo’s directions should not be assumed to apply to other computers.

How to use the manufacturer’s lookup
- Open the computer maker’s official support or warranty page.
- Enter the serial number or service tag exactly as printed.
- Read the result’s field labels and note the date type shown: it may be warranty coverage, shipment, or another support-related date rather than a factory manufacture date.
- If the result does not name a manufacture date, do not relabel a warranty or support date as one. Contact the manufacturer if you need clarification about that specific record.
Policies can vary by region and product. For example, MSI says its warranty terms vary by region and describes using a serial-based manufacturing date to calculate warranty in certain laptop cases when valid proof of purchase is unavailable. That is a specific warranty policy, not a universal method for dating computers. See MSI’s warranty information.
Can you decode the serial number yourself?
Only do this when the manufacturer documents a scheme for your exact product category. A serial-number format is not universal, and a pattern described for one product line may not work for another.

ASUS documents a scheme for listed product categories in which the first serial-number digit indicates the last digit of the manufacturing year and the second character indicates the month: 1–9 or A–C. Its support page was last updated in 2014, so check current support information for your exact unit before relying on the pattern. Do not apply it to other brands or assume it covers every ASUS product. See ASUS’s serial-number guidance.

If you cannot find a receipt or a useful manufacturer record, combine clues, but describe each clue for what it is. The exact model’s release period can establish that the computer was made no earlier than the model’s availability, but it cannot show when your individual unit was assembled or sold. A BIOS date refers to firmware; an operating-system installation date may reflect a reinstall; and a component date may belong to a part that was later replaced.

- Use the model’s release period as a broad boundary, not an individual-unit manufacture date.
- Treat BIOS and OS dates as software or firmware clues, not the computer’s build date.
- Check whether a component may have been replaced before using its date as context.
- State a range or qualified estimate, name the clues behind it, and identify what remains unknown.
There is no established universal method that derives an exact manufacture date for every make and model from these clues. An estimate should remain an estimate unless a reliable record identifies the event and date.
