For most people whose computer has no optical drive, the best CD burner is an external USB CD/DVD writer that explicitly supports writing the disc format they need. Match its operating-system requirements, connection, and bundled software to your setup. Verbatim’s External Slimline CD/DVD Writer 43886 and ASUS’s SDRW-08D2S-U are documented examples; their listed maximum CD writing speeds are specifications, not evidence that either burns faster or more reliably in practice.
How to choose a CD burner
Start with your computer and the discs you plan to make. A drive may read a format without writing it, and compatibility listed for the hardware does not necessarily apply to its bundled software.
- Operating system: Check the manufacturer’s current listing for your exact computer OS and the regional model or SKU.
- Disc writing: Confirm the drive explicitly writes CD-R, CD-RW, or both, depending on your needs. Choose DVD writing too if you want one device for DVD tasks.
- Connection: Match the drive’s USB connector or included adapters to the ports on your computer.
- Power and portability: Check whether it is USB powered and whether its dimensions and weight suit your desk or travel setup.
- Software: Verify that any bundled burning application supports your OS; the drive and its software can have different compatibility.

Choose the Verbatim 43886 if you want CD and DVD writing
Verbatim lists CD-R and CD-RW writing as well as DVD-format writing, so the drive may suit someone who wants one external device for both types of discs. It is not a Blu-ray writer. The specifications also list playback for formats including CD-Audio, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, and CD-TEXT. Choose an ASUS model based on the port you have
The SDRW-08D2S-U is listed with a USB Type-A interface, while the ZenDrive U9M lists Type-A and Type-C cable compatibility. Both are specified for CD-R and CD-RW writing up to 24X. If your computer has only USB-C ports, verify the exact cable or adapter supplied with the particular model and regional package rather than assuming the connector from a product-family name. What “up to 24X” tells you—and what it does not
Verbatim and ASUS list maximum CD writing speeds of up to 24X for the cited models. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent, comparable measurements of actual burn time, disc quality, or reliability. Actual results may depend on the drive, disc, and computer; the available product specifications do not establish which model performs better in real use.

Check software compatibility separately
A drive’s host compatibility does not mean every included application runs on that host. Verbatim lists Mac host requirements for model 43886 but states that its bundled Nero Burn & Archive software is suitable only for Windows OS. Mac buyers should confirm that their operating system has a suitable burning workflow or that an application they intend to use supports their OS before purchasing on the assumption that the included software will work.
