GrantQuest recasts scholarship searching as a role-playing-game quest log: scholarships become quests, eligibility rules become gates, required documents become inventory, and deadlines become countdowns. Its creator, Hashir, says the app also tracks applications and marks scholarship records by freshness. The concept is useful because scholarship information changes—and a visible warning about stale details can matter as much as a matching result.

How GrantQuest maps scholarship applications to an RPG

Hashir describes GrantQuest as a web app built around a familiar problem: keeping track of scholarships, their requirements, and the work needed to apply. He frames the student experience as a tangle of open tabs—“40 open tabs” is his illustration, not a measured statistic—and turns that work into a quest log.

Scholarship task GrantQuest’s reported game element
Find an opportunity A quest
Check eligibility Gates or requirements to clear
Gather application materials Inventory or documents
Keep track of the due date A countdown
Complete requirements Earn XP
Track a submitted application An application-tracking state

The metaphor is more than a cosmetic theme if the underlying requirements are structured. Hashir says GrantQuest stores eligibility gates and document requirements as data, allowing the app to reason about whether a student matches an opportunity instead of presenting every condition only as prose. That is the difference between asking “Am I eligible for this scholarship?” and having to manually interpret a long listing from scratch.

Why freshness is central to scholarship discovery

A scholarship match is only useful if the listing is still accurate. Deadlines, award details, and program rules can change, so GrantQuest reportedly gives each scholarship record a freshness state. In Hashir’s description, a record is FRESH when it was verified within the prior 30 days and its deadline has not passed. Otherwise it is marked NEEDS RE-VERIFICATION.

This is distinct from deadline urgency. A record can be recently verified but have a deadline approaching; conversely, a record can be stale even if its listed deadline is not near. Treating those as separate signals helps a user distinguish “act soon” from “check whether this information is still trustworthy.” Hashir summarizes the principle this way: “The data’s trustworthiness is modeled as data, not vibes.”

Examples of records changing

Hashir says he found guessed details in a test record for ERSU Messina, checked the official Italian notice, and corrected the amount, ISEE thresholds, and dates. He reports an award of €7,171.11 for fuori sede students, and says the record was then marked for re-verification because applications had closed. The amount and correction story are his account; the notice and current award terms have not been independently verified here.

He also says he found that the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship was no longer accepting applications and replaced its entry with the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship–Doctoral. That is an example of why listings need maintenance, not an independently verified statement about current program status or a confirmed successor relationship.

What the creator says is included—and what remains unverified

Hashir’s DEV Community project submission, published October 1, 2026, reports 25 scholarships and says the app can be used without login or signup. Those are creator-reported claims, not an independent confirmation of the live app’s current scholarship count, operation, or access requirements. The submission also describes structured fields for eligibility, required documents, deadlines, and award amounts, plus a verification workflow.

Hashir says the project uses Sanity and that a scheduled Function flags records when a deadline has passed or verification is more than 30 days old. He describes record states moving from unverified to under review to verified. These are implementation details from his account; the underlying workflow and dataset have not been independently inspected.

What the build story reveals about reliability

The project post also recounts two practical lessons from building and deploying the app. Hashir says a deployment returned 404s after shared logic was imported from above the Next.js web/ directory; he fixed that deployment by copying the file into web/lib/. That is his account of a particular build issue, not a general Vercel rule.

He also reports discovering a committed Sanity write token in .env.example, replacing it with a placeholder, revoking the exposed token, and rotating a token. This is a useful reminder that example environment files should not contain live secrets, but it does not establish that the current repository or deployment has been security-audited.

Who may find GrantQuest useful

The design is aimed at students who want one place to organize scholarship opportunities and application work, particularly those who need to check eligibility, collect documents, and monitor deadlines. The quest framing may make a long process feel more manageable, while the freshness state addresses a less visible but important question: when was this information last checked?

GrantQuest should be treated as an organizer and discovery aid, not as authority for a scholarship’s current terms. Before applying, confirm eligibility, deadlines, amounts, and required documents with the scholarship provider’s official notice. The project post is Hashir’s first-person description; it links to a demo, repository, and public dataset, but those destinations and the records were not independently examined for this article.
