The best travel backpack depends on what you need it to carry and how you travel—not just its capacity. Match the packed bag to your airline’s current cabin rules, compare your laptop’s physical dimensions with the bag’s sleeve, and consider how the harness feels under your normal load. The Osprey Farpoint 40 has manufacturer-documented laptop and harness features; the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L is another option to compare, though its current detailed specifications should be checked with Cotopaxi.
How to choose a travel backpack
Start with your trip, then check the bag against the limits that matter. Capacity in liters is useful for estimating how much a pack can hold, but it does not establish whether a packed bag will fit an airline sizer or meet a cabin-weight limit.
- Airline fit: Check the operating carrier’s current size and weight rules for your route and fare. Compare those limits with the backpack’s external dimensions when packed, not just its advertised capacity.
- Laptop protection: Compare your computer’s width, depth and thickness with the maker’s stated compartment dimensions. A screen-size label alone does not guarantee a fit.
- Carrying comfort: Look for useful torso adjustment, a hipbelt and harness features that suit your travel day. Try the backpack loaded if possible; listed features do not establish that it will fit every wearer comfortably.
- Organization: Decide whether you want a clamshell opening, internal dividers and quick-access pockets, or a simpler interior you can organize with packing cubes.
- Empty weight: A heavier pack leaves less of an airline’s cabin-weight allowance for your belongings when the carrier weighs cabin baggage.
Will a travel backpack fit as carry-on luggage?
There is no universal answer: cabin rules vary by airline, route and fare, and a soft-sided backpack’s packed shape can affect whether it fits a sizer. A 40L pack may be tight on a strict carrier when full. Osprey describes the Farpoint 40 as “Sized to meet domestic carry-on requirements,” but that is the manufacturer’s description—not a guarantee of acceptance on every airline or international route. Check the operating airline’s current rules before travel and avoid overpacking if the fit is close.
A comparison guide, Passage & Pier (2026), lists the Farpoint 40 at 21 × 15 × 10 inches. Treat that as a secondary-source figure for the listed model, not a substitute for confirming the exact regional version’s measurements with Osprey and checking your carrier’s rules.

How large a laptop fits in a travel backpack?
Check the backpack maker’s sleeve dimensions against the laptop’s actual width, depth and thickness. A stated screen size is diagonal, while a laptop’s outer dimensions determine whether it can slide into a compartment; thickness can make a nominally compatible computer too tight. Also consider whether the sleeve is accessible enough for your airport routine.
Osprey says the Farpoint 40 has a direct-zip laptop sleeve that fits most laptops up to 16 inches. “Most” matters: this is not a fit guarantee for every 16-inch laptop. Passage & Pier’s 2026 comparison lists a 15-inch sleeve for its Farpoint 40, which conflicts with Osprey’s current product-page description. Confirm the exact model and region, then compare the sleeve with your computer before buying.

Osprey Farpoint 40: for adjustable carrying and laptop access
Osprey’s product page lists adjustable torso length, a large front-panel opening, lockable main-compartment zipper sliders, a zip-away backpanel, harness and hipbelt, and the direct-zip laptop sleeve described above. The zip-away system may be useful when you want to stow the harness; the adjustable torso is a feature to consider if fit is a priority. Neither feature establishes independent comfort results or a universal fit, so try the pack loaded if practical.
Passage & Pier’s 2026 comparison lists the Farpoint 40 at 40L, 3.1 lb empty and 21 × 15 × 10 inches. These are secondary-source figures for its listed pack; confirm current specifications for your region and revision with Osprey. The comparison’s listed 15-inch sleeve is not definitive because it differs from Osprey’s current “most laptops up to 16 inches” description.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L: a smaller-capacity option to compare
Cotopaxi’s product page identifies the Allpa 35L, making it a named alternative if you are comparing a 35L pack with the Farpoint 40. The manufacturer page’s detailed specifications were not available in the information reviewed here, so current weight, external dimensions, laptop-sleeve sizing and warranty terms cannot be confirmed from it.
Passage & Pier’s 2026 comparison lists the Allpa at 35L, 2.94 lb empty, 22 × 12 × 10 inches and a 15-inch sleeve. Treat those as comparison-guide figures rather than confirmed current manufacturer specifications. Check Cotopaxi’s regional listing for the exact version before relying on any of them for a purchase or airline-fit decision.

Choose by your travel routine
- Prioritize the harness and loaded fit if you will carry the bag for long stretches between transit connections. Torso adjustment, a hipbelt and harness stowage are relevant features to compare; try the pack with a representative load when possible.
- Prioritize laptop access and measured fit if you travel with a computer. Verify the compartment dimensions for the exact bag and compare them with the laptop’s outer dimensions.
- Prioritize layout if you often need to reach specific items. Compare clamshell access, dividers and quick-access pockets, or use packing cubes to organize a less-divided interior. Cubes can help organize belongings, but they do not ensure a bag will fit an airline sizer.
- Prioritize packed dimensions and weight if you plan to use the backpack as cabin baggage. Confirm the airline’s current allowance and leave room for the bag’s own weight.
