The 2024 Kindle Scribe makes a persuasive case for combining Kindle reading and handwriting in one device, but its value depends on more than how pleasant it feels to write: annotation, notebook management and getting work back out of the Scribe matter just as much. The “half-finished” verdict is best understood as a question about that workflow, not a judgment on every reader or on later Scribe models.

What this review covers

This is the 2024 Kindle Scribe, the model Amazon positioned as a Kindle and notebook in one. It is a large-screen e-reader with a stylus workflow, not simply a conventional Kindle with a bigger display. Later Scribe models add features that do not apply to this review unit, so generation matters when comparing capabilities.

Amazon described the 2024 redesign as 5.4 mm thick and 400 g, and claimed writing and page turns were “40% faster.” Those figures and the speed comparison are manufacturer-published claims, not independent measurements. Amazon also promoted refined notebook tools and summarization features for this model and its software. Amazon’s 2024 announcement and Amazon’s Scribe FAQ describe the product and tools.

Reading and writing in one device

The Scribe’s central appeal is straightforward: use a Kindle library for reading, then pick up the included redesigned Premium Pen to write in notebooks or mark up supported reading material. For someone who already reads on Kindle and wants handwritten notes beside that activity, keeping both uses in one device may be more convenient than switching between an e-reader and paper notebook.

Amazon Kindle Scribe (16GB) - Your notes, documents and books, all in one place. With built-in AI notebook summarization. Includes Premium Pen - Tungsten
  • A digital notebook for all your writing needs - Replace your stack of notebooks with a single device purpose-built for writing, reading, and thinking. No notifications or social media.
  • With AI tools to transform your notes - Convert messy handwriting into readable font, summarize your notes, and change their length and tone with built-in AI notebook tools.
  • Feels like pen on paper - See, feel and hear your thoughts meet the page with every stroke of the Premium Pen. No need to set up or charge, just start writing.
  • Easily import and mark up documents - Import documents and PDFs using Send to Kindle, and mark them up directly on the page.
  • Capture insights as you read – Just start writing on a book's page and Active Canvas will create space for your notes. Expand the margins to add more notes, or collapse them to see the original page.

That combination is also the main trade-off. The Scribe is a larger, more specialized device than a typical Kindle, and handwriting features are useful only if the software supports the way you want to capture, organize and reuse notes. WIRED’s 2024 review reported direct annotation on ebooks and documents, as well as generative AI features, but questioned whether Active Canvas was intuitive. That is a reviewer’s usability concern, not proof that every owner will find it confusing. WIRED’s 2024 review discusses those features and the interface.

Notebook tools and annotation

Handwriting and notebooks

Amazon said the 2024 model included a redesigned Premium Pen and notebook capabilities for refining handwriting and summarizing notes. These are manufacturer-described features; their usefulness depends on whether the resulting text and organization fit your actual note-taking habits. They should not be mistaken for a guarantee that the Scribe can replace every notebook workflow.

Marking up books and documents

Direct ebook and document annotation was a meaningful addition in WIRED’s account of the 2024 Scribe. Before buying for a particular reading or study routine, distinguish writing in a Scribe notebook from annotating a source document and then continuing to edit that source elsewhere. Those are different workflows, and the available review evidence does not establish that every kind of annotation will travel seamlessly between apps.

Where the workflow can feel unfinished

A good handwriting surface is only one part of a note-taking device. The less settled questions are how easily you can find and revise notes, whether annotation feels natural while reading, and how much effort it takes to export or continue work on another service. WIRED’s question about Active Canvas points to the gap that can remain between having an annotation feature and having an intuitive reading-and-writing flow.

Export and cloud behavior should be evaluated against the exact Scribe generation and software version. In its 2025 review of a later Scribe, TechRadar reported Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive connectivity, but said reflecting changes required exporting a file and editing it in Google Docs. That describes the reviewer’s experience with the later model’s workflow; it is not evidence that the 2024 Scribe has the same integrations or that every current software version behaves identically. TechRadar’s 2025 review covers that later workflow.

Is the 2024 Kindle Scribe worth it?

It is most compelling for a reader who wants Kindle reading and handwriting together, and who is comfortable with the Scribe’s own notebook and annotation workflow. It is harder to justify if your priority is moving edited notes freely among document editors and cloud services, or if you need capabilities introduced on a newer model.

For context, TechRadar listed the 16GB 2024 configuration with Premium Pen at $399.99, £379.99 and AU$649 in its 2024 review. These are historical review-era prices, not current offers; availability and present pricing may differ by country and retailer. TechRadar’s 2024 review reports those launch-market figures.

  • Consider it if Kindle reading and handwritten notes belong in the same device and its notebook tools suit you.
  • Look carefully at the workflow if ebook annotation, Active Canvas, export or editing outside Amazon is central to your use.
  • Compare generations if you want color writing or newer cloud-related features; do not assume they are part of the 2024 model.
  • Compare alternatives by reading-library fit, pen and writing experience, document annotation, export and editing flow, screen needs, storage and current local price.

How it differs from later Scribe models

Amazon’s later product announcement describes color pen and highlighter options and new folio covers for the lineup. These are later-generation details, not features of the 2024 Scribe. TechRadar’s 2025 review also discusses Google Drive and OneDrive connectivity on a later model. If color marking or cloud handoff is essential, confirm the specific model’s features rather than applying later coverage to this one. Amazon’s later Scribe announcement outlines the newer lineup.
