A working chat and memory text visible in context do not prove that an agent successfully retrieved memory with a tool. In one Docker deployment described by DEV Community contributor liuyuyan6100, passive memory injection continued while active retrieval requests timed out: the generated gateway address was reachable inside the container network but not from the tool execution environment. The author’s diagnosis and proposed correction are useful troubleshooting clues, but the post-fix checks were still pending.
What does a working chat actually prove?
A successful chat request shows that a client-to-gateway route works for that chat request. It does not show that the separate environment executing a tool can reach a URL supplied in the tool instructions. The model can select an appropriate tool and the executor can still fail before the request reaches the service.
That distinction matters in the case reported by liuyuyan6100 on DEV Community. Memory continued to appear in context, but active retrieval calls timed out. The author summarized the evidence standard this way: “A plausible answer is insufficient evidence that the retrieval path succeeded.”
Why can memory appear when retrieval fails?
Passive injection and active retrieval are different paths. In the reported proxy, server-side injection could add information to context, including L3 core memory, L2 scenario indexes, persona information, and a skill list. Active retrieval instead exposed bridge endpoints in tool instructions, including ${base}/memory-bridge/v3 and ${base}/skill-bridge/v3/skill. The client-side tool executor had to connect to the generated base address to use those endpoints.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Because the server’s injection path and the executor’s network path can differ, context may contain memory even when an active tool call cannot reach the bridge. A later answer that sounds informed is not proof of retrieval: the content could have arrived through injection or another available path.
How can a generated gateway URL fail in Docker?
The author traced the issue in their deployment to a generated gateway address that worked within the container network but was inaccessible to the external tool executor. This is the author’s diagnosis of that case, not an independently reproduced result or a universal Docker behavior.

The implementation detail is revision-sensitive. In the TencentCloud repository’s mutable feat/server_team branch, the linked injection source gives injection.externalGatewayUrl priority when configured. If it is absent and the configured host is 0.0.0.0 or 127.0.0.1, the described fallback selects a non-internal IPv4 address, builds an HTTP base URL, and emits a warning. Check the implementation at the exact revision you deploy; a mutable branch may not match your version.
An address suitable for communication inside a deployment’s container network may not be routable or resolvable from a separate tool executor. The key question is not simply whether the gateway works from the chat client, but whether the process that issues the tool request can reach the address it was given.

How should you interpret connectivity probes?
- HTTP 401: An HTTP service responded and requires authentication. That confirms a response at the HTTP layer, not that authentication, a memory operation, or retrieval succeeded.
000or no HTTP response: No HTTP response was received. This does not identify the cause; timeout, DNS failure, and routing problems are among the possibilities.
Use a probe as a transport check, not as proof of a successful memory operation. Application-level success and the expected retrieved content are separate things to verify.
What configuration change did the author propose?
The proposed correction was to configure a gateway entry point reachable from the tool executor and ensure the reverse proxy forwards the bridge paths. The example domain in the case report is illustrative, not an endpoint to copy. Persist the setting in the source configuration rather than editing a generated startup file, then test from the exact runtime that makes the tool request.

For the linked branch, injection.externalGatewayUrl takes precedence over the described fallback. Confirm that behavior against your deployed revision and choose an address that the executor—not only the gateway container or chat client—can reach. The author had not yet confirmed that this proposed correction worked.
Why might knowledge-resource tools still fail?
Registered knowledge-resource URLs are a separate failure surface. The case report says wiki or code-graph tools use addresses saved when those resources are registered, independently of the gateway base URL. Changing externalGatewayUrl therefore does not automatically repair a resource’s saved address.

Check each registered URL from the runtime that executes its tool. For example, host.docker.internal may not resolve in a Linux environment unless corresponding configuration exists; do not assume a hostname portable across Docker environments will work in the executor.
How can you verify retrieval end to end?
The following are proposed checks from the author’s case report, not tests the author said were completed:
- Probe from the actual tool execution environment. Confirm that the address injected into tool instructions reaches the intended gateway from that runtime.
- Make the change persistent. Update the source configuration, start a fresh conversation, and inspect the newly injected tool URLs rather than relying on a prior session’s instructions.
- Test an authorized memory request. Confirm application-level success and inspect whether the result contains information from the expected source. Do not infer success just because a subsequent answer is plausible; it may have come from local search or injected context.
- Test registered resources separately. For each knowledge-resource URL, verify name resolution and connectivity from its execution environment, then retrieve an expected item and confirm its source.
The report does not establish that the proposed fix worked, nor does it measure any effect on answer quality. Treat a reachable URL as one checkpoint in the chain, not as the final proof that memory retrieval succeeded.
