The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the newer, higher-performance platform on paper, but the available benchmark results are not a controlled, same-phone comparison with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Qualcomm claims generational gains for the Elite Gen 5, while 91mobiles reports higher AnTuTu results for tested devices. For a buying decision, treat those scores as indicators—not guarantees of how two complete phones will perform.
Specifications at a glance
| Specification | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 |
|---|---|---|
| CPU architecture | 3rd Gen Oryon CPU, according to Qualcomm (Qualcomm product page) | Not stated on the cited Qualcomm product page (Qualcomm product page) |
| Maximum listed CPU frequency | Up to 4.74 GHz; Qualcomm also lists a 4.6 GHz version (Qualcomm product page) | Up to 3.36 GHz; Qualcomm notes a 3.19 GHz variant (Qualcomm product page) |
| Fabrication process | Not stated on the cited Qualcomm product page | 4 nm, according to Qualcomm (Qualcomm product page) |
| Qualcomm performance claims | Compared with the prior generation in Qualcomm’s stated context: 20% better CPU performance and 23% better GPU performance; Qualcomm also claims 35% better CPU power efficiency and 20% better GPU power efficiency (2025) (Qualcomm announcement) | Qualcomm’s product page says graphics are 25% faster in its prior-generation comparison; that claim is not a direct comparison with Elite Gen 5 (Qualcomm product page) |
| AnTuTu result | 4,033,382 in 91mobiles’ tested comparison; year not stated on the accessed page (91mobiles) | 1,611,015 in the same publication’s tested comparison; year not stated on the accessed page (91mobiles) |
These are the specifications and results established by the cited sources, not a complete feature-by-feature inventory. Modem and connectivity details, memory support, GPU features, camera and image-processing capabilities, and AI functions should be checked against the exact handset and regional configuration being considered.
What the benchmark results show—and what they do not
AnTuTu: a tested-device comparison
91mobiles reports AnTuTu scores of 4,033,382 for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and 1,611,015 for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. AnTuTu combines CPU, GPU, memory, and I/O results, so the scores reflect more than processor performance alone. They are results from the publication’s tests, not universal scores that every phone with either chip should reach.
The available report does not establish that both chips were tested in identical phones under identical conditions. Differences in cooling, power limits, memory, software, and test setup can influence results, so the figures are useful as an indication of relative performance, not a precise prediction for a particular pair of phones.

Geekbench 6: a reference-device result
Tom’s Guide reports Geekbench 6 scores of 3,832 single-core and 12,208 multi-core for a Qualcomm-supplied Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 reference device with 24 GB of memory (Tom’s Guide). Those scores describe that reference device. The report does not provide a same-device, same-conditions Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 head-to-head, so it cannot by itself quantify the gap between the two chips.
How to interpret Qualcomm’s performance and efficiency claims
Qualcomm’s 2025 figures for Elite Gen 5—20% better CPU performance, 35% better CPU power efficiency, 23% better GPU performance, and 20% better GPU power efficiency—are manufacturer claims about its stated generation-over-generation comparison. They are not direct claims against Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Qualcomm’s separate 8 Gen 2 product-page graphics figure likewise uses its own prior-generation context, not an Elite Gen 5 comparison.

- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
Clock speed is only one part of performance. The Elite Gen 5’s listed maximum is higher, but real-world speed and battery use also depend on the phone’s cooling design, power settings, memory, software, and the workload. A short benchmark run and sustained gaming or other demanding work can therefore tell different stories about the same handset.
What this means when choosing a phone
When the newer chip is the stronger option
If two phones are otherwise comparable, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 model is the more compelling choice for buyers prioritizing the newer platform and the higher performance direction indicated by Qualcomm’s claims and the cited AnTuTu tests. Qualcomm identifies the Galaxy S26 series as using a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy variant (Qualcomm product page). Check the specifications for the exact model and region: a branded platform variant and the phone’s configuration matter.

When a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phone can still make sense
A Gen 2 phone may be the better purchase if its overall price, battery behavior, cooling, camera implementation, update support, and condition suit you better. The chip name alone cannot establish those handset-level qualities, and benchmark figures should not override differences that matter more in daily use.
Compare the complete devices
- Check the price of the exact model and storage configuration, not just the chipset tier.
- Look for battery and sustained-performance evidence for that phone; thermal design and power limits affect long sessions.
- Compare camera hardware and the manufacturer’s image-processing implementation, as chipset capability does not guarantee identical photos.
- Confirm software-update support and regional model specifications before buying.
Verdict
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the more advanced platform by the specifications and manufacturer claims available here, and 91mobiles’ tested AnTuTu results favor it over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. But the benchmark comparison is not established as a controlled, identical-condition test, and Qualcomm’s percentage gains are not direct Gen 5-versus-Gen 2 claims. Choose between phones by weighing their verified, model-specific performance and features against price, battery, cooling, camera, and support—not by the processor label alone.
