There is no single best handheld gaming console for everyone. Start with the games you want to play: Nintendo Switch 2 is the clearest choice for Nintendo exclusives, Steam Deck OLED suits a Steam library, and the ROG Xbox Ally models target players who want Windows PC storefronts. Retroid Pocket 5 is a different kind of handheld, aimed at Android games, streaming and retro games you own.
The prices below are UK figures reported in September 2026, not universal or guaranteed current prices. The comparison source says it used manufacturer specifications and prices and did not test the consoles itself.
Which handheld gaming console should you buy?
| Handheld | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo exclusives and a straightforward handheld-to-TV option | The UK comparison reports a 7.9-inch 1080p, 120 Hz LCD and TV output through the included dock. Its reported UK list price was £419.99 after a September 1, 2026 increase. [Compare Electronic, September 2026] |
| Steam Deck OLED | Players with Steam purchases who want SteamOS and an OLED screen | Valve lists a 7.4-inch 1280 × 800 HDR OLED display, up to 90 Hz, and a content-dependent estimated battery life of 3–12 hours. The comparison reports a UK list price of £649 for the 512 GB model after a May 27, 2026 increase. [Valve; Compare Electronic, September 2026] |
| ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) | Players who want a high-spec Windows handheld and broad PC game-library access | ASUS lists a 7.4-inch 1080p OLED display at 120 Hz with VRR and HDR, Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, Windows 11 and an Xbox-focused interface. No price is stated in the cited ASUS product page. [ASUS ROG] |
| ROG Xbox Ally | Windows handheld gaming at a lower price than the comparison’s PC alternatives | The UK comparison positions the base Ally as its lower-cost Windows option and describes access to PC storefronts through Windows. Check regional hardware and pricing before buying. [Compare Electronic, September 2026] |
| Retroid Pocket 5 | Android games, streaming and retro games you own | This is not a native way to play current Nintendo or PC games. The UK comparison lists it as a separate Android handheld category. [Compare Electronic, September 2026] |
Choose by the games and storefront you already use
Nintendo games: Switch 2
If Nintendo’s own game library is the priority, Switch 2 is the direct fit. The UK comparison also highlights the included dock and TV output, useful if you want to move between handheld and television play without treating the device like a Windows PC. Its screen and price figures here come from that comparison rather than a cited Nintendo product page.
Steam purchases: Steam Deck OLED
Steam Deck OLED is the natural starting point if your games are already on Steam and you want Valve’s SteamOS experience. Check individual game compatibility rather than assuming every Steam title works identically on a handheld. Valve says all Steam Deck models support microSD cards for storage expansion, and the device can connect to displays over USB-C; Valve also offers an official Docking Station. [Valve Steam Deck]

Windows PC storefronts: ROG Xbox Ally models
The Ally family is the Windows route in this group. The comparison describes native Windows access to PC storefronts, which can suit people whose purchases are spread across launchers. Windows handheld use is a different operating experience from a console-style interface, so consider how much setup and navigation you are comfortable with. The ASUS X20 page identifies Windows 11 and an Xbox-focused interface, but does not establish comparative game performance against the other devices.
Android and retro play: Retroid Pocket 5
Retroid Pocket 5 belongs in the conversation if Android titles, streaming or retro games you own are the goal. It is not a substitute for a device that runs current Nintendo releases or PC games natively. Confirm how any specific game or streaming service works on the device before buying.

How the screens and battery figures compare
| Device | Published display details | Battery information in cited sources |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 7.9-inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD, as reported by Compare Electronic in September 2026. [Source] | not stated in cited sources |
| Steam Deck OLED | 7.4-inch, 1280 × 800 HDR OLED, up to 90 Hz, according to Valve’s product page. [Valve] | Valve estimates 3–12 hours depending on content; this is a manufacturer estimate, not a controlled comparison test. [Valve] |
| ROG Xbox Ally X20 (2026) | 7.4-inch 1080p OLED, 120 Hz, VRR and HDR, according to ASUS ROG. [ASUS ROG] | not stated in cited sources |
| ROG Xbox Ally and Retroid Pocket 5 | not stated in cited sources | not stated in cited sources |
These specifications describe different displays, not the results of a shared picture-quality or performance test. A higher resolution or refresh rate alone does not establish which handheld looks or plays better for a particular game. Battery life is likewise hard to compare from these sources: Valve provides a range for Steam Deck OLED, while no equivalent common test is available for the other listed systems.

The cited ASUS page does not state a price for the 2026 ROG Xbox Ally X20, and the comparison does not provide enough price detail here to make a reliable cross-market ranking of the base Ally or Retroid Pocket 5. - Storage: Valve confirms microSD expansion for all Steam Deck models. The comparison specifies microSD Express for Switch 2; check the precise card standard and compatibility for your model rather than assuming ordinary microSD cards are interchangeable. [Valve; Compare Electronic]

A quick decision checklist
- Write down the games you most want to play, then confirm they are available and compatible on the platform you are considering.
- Choose Switch 2 for Nintendo exclusives; Steam Deck OLED for a Steam-centered library; an Ally for Windows PC storefront use; or Retroid Pocket 5 for Android, streaming and owned retro games.
- Decide whether you want a simple console-style experience or are comfortable using a Windows handheld.
- Compare screen type and size with your preferences, but do not treat resolution and refresh rate as a complete quality ranking.
- Check battery information for the particular model and game workload. Valve’s 3–12 hour OLED estimate varies with content.
- Confirm your local price, regional configuration, storage-card compatibility and whether the needed dock or other accessory is included.
