In 2026 agency guides, estimates range from $1,000–$5,000 for customizing an existing theme to $80,000–$150,000 or more for a headless Hydrogen build. Those figures describe different scopes, not standardized Shopify prices. To judge a quote, compare the deliverables, exclusions, migration, integrations, launch work, and support—not just the total.
How much does Shopify development cost?
It depends on what “development” includes: configuring an existing theme, creating a custom theme, building a Shopify Plus storefront, or developing a separate headless front end. The following are estimates published by two agencies in 2026, not prices issued by Shopify or an independent industry survey.
| Project or service | Published estimate | Source and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Theme customization | $1,000–$5,000 | Capaxe Labs, 2026; changes to an existing theme, such as layout, sections, app styling, responsive fixes, and minor Liquid edits. Source |
| Custom theme development | $5,000–$25,000+ | Capaxe Labs, 2026. The guide describes this as a starting-point estimate, not a fixed quote. Source |
| Custom non-Plus build | $20,000–$80,000 | Flux Agency, 2026; its estimate is framed for brands with roughly under $1 million in annual revenue. Source |
| Shopify Plus theme build | $60,000–$150,000 | Flux Agency, 2026; full theme build. Source |
| Headless Hydrogen build | $80,000–$150,000+ | Flux Agency, 2026. Source |
These ranges are not directly interchangeable. Capaxe’s lower figures distinguish theme customization and custom theme work; Flux’s estimates describe broader project types. Use them to orient a budget, then request a proposal based on your requirements. Geography, taxes, Shopify subscriptions, payment processing, and app charges are separate cost questions; the agency estimates above do not establish those amounts.
What are you paying for?
A development quote is a bundle of work and assumptions. Two agencies can quote different totals because one includes bespoke design, more integrations, migration, quality assurance, analytics, launch support, or post-launch care while the other excludes them. Flux identifies configuration versus custom development, integration count, design approach, and after-launch coverage as factors in quote variation. Proscube also points to catalogue structure, content readiness, approvals, team seniority, and change-order terms. These are provider observations, not controlled industry measurements; use them to frame questions about your own proposals.
#1 Best Overall
Theme configuration or custom theme
With theme customization, much of the storefront structure already exists and the work adapts it. Custom theme development can involve more original design and implementation. Ask which existing theme or foundation is assumed, which templates and sections will be built or changed, and what custom behaviors are included.
Integrations and data
Name every system that must connect—such as an ERP, 3PL, subscription service, loyalty platform, CRM, or reviews tool—and specify what data must move between them. Flux notes that integration count can matter more than catalogue size for larger catalogues. Treat that as a prompt to inspect the actual integration work, not a universal pricing rule.
Rank #2
Migration, launch, and support
Moving products is only one possible part of migration. Pages, blog content, customers, orders, product attributes, redirects, data cleanup, analytics, device and browser testing, launch coverage, training, and post-launch defect handling may each be included, excluded, or limited. Have the proposal say which of these it covers and on what terms.
How to compare Shopify development quotes
Put proposals side by side and make each agency describe the same categories. Proscube’s pricing guidance highlights many of these scope items, including templates and revisions, integrations, migration, redirects, technical SEO, analytics, QA, launch support, training, documentation, and ownership.

| Quote line | What to ask the agency to specify |
|---|---|
| Discovery and design | Number of page or template designs, depth of the design system, revision rounds, and approval assumptions. |
| Theme and development | Existing theme versus custom foundation; templates, sections, components, and bespoke functionality included. |
| Integrations | Each connected system and the data exchanged; identify who configures, develops, and maintains each connection. |
| Catalogue and migration | Whether products, variants, attributes, pages, blog, customers, and orders are included; note data cleanup and redirect work. |
| SEO and analytics | Redirect map, technical SEO tasks, analytics setup, and conversion tracking. |
| Quality and launch | Browser and device QA, acceptance criteria, launch-day coverage, rollback arrangements, and defect handling. |
| After launch | Support duration, response expectations, training, documentation, and any monthly retainer. |
| Commercial terms | Explicit exclusions, change-order process and rates, payment milestones, code ownership, and account ownership. |
Once the scope is aligned, investigate the largest differences. If one quote costs more, ask which additional deliverable, integration, migration task, QA commitment, or support period accounts for it. If a line item is vague, ask the agency to turn it into a named output and acceptance condition.
What to get in writing before signing
- Deliverables: templates, sections, custom features, and the number of design revisions.
- Integrations: named systems, data flows, responsibilities, and any third-party dependencies.
- Migration: included data types, cleanup, redirect mapping, and any limits on records or content.
- Testing and launch: supported devices and browsers, acceptance criteria, launch coverage, and defect response.
- Support and handoff: included support period, training, documentation, and ongoing service terms.
- Ownership and changes: ownership of code and store accounts, exclusions, and the process and rates for out-of-scope work.
Ask how the agency will validate assumptions and price a newly discovered integration or content gap. Fixed scope and uncertain scope involve different assumptions; the important point is to understand how changes are handled rather than assuming one contract model is always safer.

Theme-based versus headless: what changes in the budget?
A theme-based storefront uses Shopify’s theme approach; a headless storefront separates the customer-facing front end from the commerce backend. The estimates below are Flux Agency’s 2026 figures, not a universal rule that every headless project costs more or every store needs a custom front end.
| Approach | Flux Agency’s 2026 estimate | Budget consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Theme-based build | $60,000–$150,000 for its full Shopify Plus theme build | Ask what is bespoke versus configured, and what the quote includes for integrations, launch, and support. |
| Headless Hydrogen build | $80,000–$150,000+ | Evaluate the need for a separate custom front end alongside its build and ongoing support requirements. |
Headless support is another potential recurring cost, not part of a one-time build figure. Flux estimates $1,000–$3,000 per month for theme-store development and support, and $3,000–$8,000 per month for headless support in its 2026 guide. These are the agency’s estimates, not standard rates. Ask whether the proposed monthly service is optional, what work it covers, and how response expectations are defined.

How much does Shopify support cost after launch?
Some agencies price ongoing development and support separately from the initial build. Flux Agency’s 2026 guide estimates $1,000–$3,000 per month for theme-store development and support and $3,000–$8,000 per month for headless support. Treat these as that provider’s estimates. Compare the covered hours or work, response expectations, exclusions, and cancellation terms rather than treating the monthly number alone as a like-for-like offer.
