The iPhone 17 is the smaller option, with Apple’s A19 chip and a 6.3-inch display. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 FE gives you a larger 6.7-inch screen, a dedicated 3× optical telephoto camera, and a stated seven-generation OS-upgrade and seven-year security-update commitment. The better fit depends on screen size, camera needs, ecosystem, and the price you can actually get—not a spec-sheet winner.

Which phone has the better screen and handling?
The Galaxy S24 FE’s display is larger: Samsung lists 6.7 inches, compared with Apple’s 6.3-inch iPhone 17 display. Both specifications list adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, though Samsung also specifies a 60Hz mode. The diagonal measurements need context: Apple’s display is 6.27 inches when measured as a standard rectangle, while Samsung gives 6.5 inches when accounting for its rounded corners.
Choose the S24 FE if a larger viewing area matters most for reading, video, or games. The iPhone 17’s smaller screen is the more compact choice. Display size alone does not establish brightness or overall image quality across the two phones; Samsung’s cited US product page separately lists a 1,900-nit peak-brightness figure, but that is not a directly comparable measurement from both manufacturers’ launch specifications.
How do their cameras differ?
The clearest hardware distinction is zoom. Samsung lists a separate 8MP telephoto camera with 3× optical zoom and optical image stabilization. Apple lists a 12MP optical-quality 2× telephoto mode enabled by the iPhone 17’s 48MP main camera, rather than a dedicated telephoto camera in the specification described here.

For subjects that benefit from a tighter optical view—such as distant details or portraits framed from farther away—the S24 FE’s dedicated 3× camera is the more explicit hardware option. The iPhone pairs its 2× mode with a 48MP ultra-wide camera, while Samsung lists a 12MP ultra-wide. Resolution and zoom specifications do not prove which phone takes better photos: no controlled, independent side-by-side image-quality test is established here.
Price difference: what can you compare?
There is no reliable current, like-for-like unlocked US price difference established by the available figures. Samsung announced the Galaxy S24 FE at a US starting price of $649.99 in 2024; that is its launch price, not a current street-price quote. AT&T’s comparison page showed an iPhone 17 retail starting price of $929.99 alongside a $0-per-month offer conditional on an eligible trade-in and plan, spread across 36 months of bill credits. Before deciding which costs less, compare the same storage tier and check whether each listing is unlocked or carrier-locked. Include taxes, trade-in eligibility and value, required plan, bill-credit duration, and stock at checkout. A launch MSRP on one phone and a conditional carrier offer on another do not produce a meaningful current price gap.

Choose the iPhone 17 if
- You prefer a smaller screen and want the iPhone platform.
- You already rely on Apple devices or services and want to stay in that ecosystem.
- The listed 256GB or 512GB capacity options suit your needs.
Choose the Galaxy S24 FE if
- You want a larger display and a dedicated 3× optical telephoto camera.
- You prefer Android or your existing devices and services fit Samsung’s ecosystem.
- Samsung’s stated seven OS generations and seven years of security updates are important to your buying decision.
The listed A19 and Exynos 2400e chips are not enough to declare a real-world performance winner. Likewise, battery capacity alone cannot settle battery life, and no controlled side-by-side performance or endurance test is established here. Decide based on the features and platform you will use, then compare current offers on equivalent terms.
