Yes—claim a monthly PS Plus game before it leaves the offer if you may want to play it later. You do not need to download it right away. Claiming adds it to your library, but it does not make the game a permanent purchase: you need an active PlayStation Plus membership to play it through Plus.
What claiming a monthly game actually does
PlayStation says you can add monthly games to your library and download and play them while you have an active membership plan. “Keep” is only shorthand for retaining the library entitlement while your membership is active. Claiming does not give you ownership independent of PS Plus.
When claiming is worthwhile
Claiming is a sensible low-commitment choice if there is a reasonable chance you will play the title and you expect to keep or renew PS Plus. The key is to add it to your library while it is still part of the monthly offer; waiting until you are ready to play may mean the offer has changed.

- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
- Likely to stay subscribed: Claim it now and download it when you want to play.
- Unsure whether you will play: Claim it if it interests you; there is no need to install it immediately.
- Expect to cancel and need access afterward: A claim alone will not provide that. If independent access matters, consider buying the particular game outright after confirming the platform and edition you want.
What happens if your membership lapses?
When your membership ends, games obtained at no extra cost through PS Plus become unavailable through the subscription. PlayStation’s UK cancellation guidance explains that subscription benefits end after the paid period and subscription games become unavailable. PlayStation’s Sweden membership guide says returning subscribers regain access to previously downloaded Plus content, but this is region-specific guidance; policy details and availability can vary by region.
Monthly games are not the same as catalog games
All PS Plus tiers include monthly games. Extra and Premium also include the Game Catalog, and Premium adds the Classics Catalog. Catalog titles can have announced removal dates, so adding or downloading one should not be treated as the same lasting library entitlement as claiming a monthly game. Check the title’s status and any end date in your region. PlayStation’s US games FAQ describes catalog removal dates and tier differences.

Check the offer and regional terms
Monthly games change, and availability can differ by country or region, tier, platform, and device. PlayStation’s US PS Plus usage terms also state that games and benefits may change and that downloaded games require a valid subscription and continued availability in the service. Check the current PlayStation monthly-games page and your regional listing before relying on a particular title being claimable.
