The interview is launch-era engineering discussion, not a current product review or independent test.
How does the Roomba Combo j7+ keep its mop off carpet?
The Combo j7+ has a movable mop pad, rather than a pad that remains in contact with the floor or lifts only slightly. IEEE Spectrum’s 2022 feature describes actuated arms and belt drives that raise the pad all the way from underneath the robot to its top. The robot uses ultrasonic sensors to detect carpet; on carpet, it lifts the pad and vacuums. On hard floors, it can vacuum and mop in one pass. These are the feature’s descriptions of the design, not results from independent testing.
Angle summed up the engineering breakthrough this way: “The short answer is that we finally figured out how to do it.” In the interview, he also recalled asking, “Well, why don’t we just use a belt drive and arms?”
Why did iRobot combine vacuuming and mopping?
Asked why iRobot moved from dedicated vacuum and mop robots toward one machine that performs both tasks, Angle said the company saw value in switching between them on the fly and avoiding duplicated hardware. He described the design as the result of a long development effort, following earlier Scooba and Braava products and unsuccessful attempts to create an edge-to-edge mopping system for the Roomba platform. That is Angle’s account of the company’s design rationale, not evidence that a combined robot outperforms separate machines.

What are the practical trade-offs?
The integrated system has costs in space and upkeep. IEEE Spectrum reported that the water reservoir takes up some of the dust-bin volume, and owners must refill the reservoir at a sink. The feature said one fill covered 1,000 square feet in eco mode; that is a launch-era product figure reported in 2022, not independently verified coverage.
A combined robot offers the convenience of one machine switching tasks, while separate vacuum and mop robots retain dedicated hardware and require users to coordinate them. The interview did not include a controlled comparison of cleaning performance, reliability, or ownership costs, so it does not establish which setup is better for a particular home.

What else did Angle discuss?
Angle described iRobot’s preference for the J-series architecture and computer vision. He also said mission completion mattered more to him than the speed advantage he associated with the s9’s square front. These are his design priorities as expressed in the 2022 interview, not universal conclusions about robot-vacuum geometry.
The feature also reported that iRobot OS 5.0 increased the j7 robots’ announced obstacle-recognition count from four classes to 80. That was a historical, company-reported software figure, not a claim about the robot’s current feature count.

What did the interview say about privacy?
Discussing mapping and images, Angle told IEEE Spectrum: “You don’t have to turn on mapping, and you certainly don’t have to ever store or share any image from your home.” This describes what he said in 2022; it should not be treated as a guarantee of iRobot’s current privacy practices or policy.
Launch price and product context
IEEE Spectrum described the Combo j7+ as a premium product and reported U.S. preorder pricing of US$1,099 in 2022. That is historical launch pricing, not a current price or evidence that the model is still sold new. iRobot’s SEC filing identifies the Combo j7+ as a product introduced in late 2022.

Accessories and cleaning-solution guidance
iRobot’s official store currently lists a washable pad two-pack for Combo j7, j7+, and j9+ models, and a replenishment kit for the Combo j7+, j9+, and 10 Max families. The pad listing says it is not compatible with Combo j5+ or non-combo j7 and j9 models, so check the exact model before ordering. The replenishment kit listing includes filters, edge-sweeping brushes, and microfiber mop pads. Stock and offers can change.
For mopping solution, follow the current model-specific guidance rather than assuming a generic cleaner is safe. iRobot Support’s North America guidance, dated September 2, 2026, warns that unapproved cleaning solutions may void warranty coverage or cause corrosion or malfunction.
