Zero Zero Robotics’ HOVERAir X1 grew out of founder Meng Qiu Wang’s idea to turn smartphone components into a tiny robot. After a decade of experiments, a failed business deal, contract engineering and a detour into conventional drones, the company returned to its original ambition: a camera that could fly and film a person on its own.

The idea: a phone without its screen, made into a robot

In a retrospective interview with IEEE Spectrum, Zero Zero Robotics founder and CEO Meng Qiu Wang described the concept that started the company. “In 2014 I looked at my cell phone and thought that if I could throw away the parts I don’t need—like the screen—and add some sensors, I could build a tiny robot.”

Wang and co-founder Tony Zhang had completed computer-science Ph.D. studies at Stanford before founding Zero Zero Robotics in 2014, according to the company’s history. They began development in Silicon Valley and later moved it to China. The phone analogy mattered: instead of building a flying camera around a conventional drone’s controls, the founders wanted to combine compact electronics with onboard perception so the camera could navigate and follow a person autonomously.

Using cameras to understand motion

Wang told IEEE Spectrum that the early concept used one camera to observe the ground and estimate the aircraft’s movement, while another recognized and tracked a person. That image-processing approach is a defining thread between the original idea and the X1: make the camera itself behave like a camera operator, rather than requiring the user to pilot every movement.

Wang summarized the ambition as “to turn the camera into a cameraman.” The phrase captures both the appeal and the difficulty of the project. A flying camera must do more than stay aloft: it must interpret its surroundings, keep a subject in frame, and make useful footage without a pilot constantly correcting it.

Early flying cameras brought attention—and setbacks

Zero Zero emerged from stealth in 2016 with an early flying-camera product. Wang recalled a price of US$600 and a burst of attention from the press and retailers. In his interview, he remembered about 2,200 media outlets covering the company. He also recalled that roughly 50,000 early units were sold and that the product generated about US$15 million over six months. Those are Wang’s interview-era recollections, not audited sales figures.

The company expanded quickly, but growth did not guarantee a sustainable product business. Wang said Zero Zero accepted an offer from a large company that ultimately did not work out; the interview did not identify that company. He recalled that the fallout forced staff reductions and a shift toward contract engineering, including computer-vision work for larger drones.

A 2018 Kickstarter effort also proved difficult. Wang said some customers received their orders, while others were refunded after the team could not make the remote controller work. It was another reminder that a compelling autonomous-camera concept still depended on the less visible work of making every part of a consumer product function reliably.

A conventional-drone detour: the V-Coptr

Zero Zero later turned toward a more conventional drone: the V-Coptr, a V-shaped aircraft with two propellers intended to compete in the established drone market. Wang said the team spent four years on it. The company’s history records the introduction of the V-Coptr Falcon in 2019.

The V-Coptr chapter was a departure from the original “tiny robot” vision, but it also belonged to the same effort to find a viable product. After pursuing a familiar drone category, the company eventually redirected its attention to the kind of self-flying camera that had inspired Wang in the first place.

How the HOVERAir X1 brought the original concept back

Zero Zero says it unveiled the HOVERAir brand and X1 in 2022. By the time of Wang’s IEEE Spectrum interview, the X1 had become the company’s most consumer-oriented flying camera, and the company was concentrating on the category again. Wang described the long development as “like a 10-year-long Ph.D. project.”

The current HOVERAir X1 is a foldable, 125 g self-flying camera, according to the manufacturer’s product page. It can take off from a user’s palm and offers preset flight modes including Follow, Hover, Orbit, Zoom Out and Bird’s Eye. HOVERAir lists visual-inertial odometry (VIO) positioning and a time-of-flight altitude system among its specifications. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent test results.

The X1’s appeal is that a user can choose a camera movement rather than manually pilot a conventional drone for every shot. But autonomous tracking is not the same as unrestricted flight: the aircraft has to interpret the scene and follow a safe path, which makes its operating limits central to deciding when and where to use it.

What the X1’s stated specifications mean in practice

  • Flight time: HOVERAir specifies a maximum of 11.5 minutes. Treat this as the manufacturer’s stated maximum, not a guaranteed duration in every flight condition.
  • Height: HOVERAir lists a maximum flight height of 33 ft (10 m), with Bird’s Eye mode configurable to 49 ft (15 m). Check the current product page for the applicable regional display and configuration.
  • Tracking: Wang told IEEE Spectrum that the X1 tracks people, not pets. The manufacturer’s illustrative marketing should not be read as establishing pet tracking.
  • Navigation: The manufacturer lists VIO positioning and time-of-flight altitude measurement. Wang’s interview explains the underlying challenge of camera-based navigation: the system estimates movement from visual information, and some scenes are harder to interpret than others.

Where the X1 should not fly

HOVERAir says the X1 is not waterproof, should not be flown in rain, and is not designed for flights over water, cliffs or terrain with indistinct ground textures. Its FAQ recommends sufficiently lit, textured ground and warns about strong wind. These restrictions are especially important for a camera whose navigation depends on interpreting what it sees.

Wang explained to IEEE Spectrum that moving water can confuse image-based speed-estimation algorithms. If the visual pattern beneath the aircraft shifts unpredictably, the system may have difficulty inferring the drone’s movement relative to the ground. That makes water a poor environment for a flight approach built around visual motion cues.

Tracking also carries a path risk: Wang said the X1 follows the subject’s path. A person who abruptly moves into bushes or another inaccessible area can lead the aircraft toward an obstacle or a place from which recovery is difficult. Use the preset modes only in open, suitable surroundings, and do not treat autonomous following as obstacle-proof piloting.

Safety and local drone rules still apply

The official X1 safety manual says requirements vary by region and advises users to follow local drone laws and keep the aircraft within sight. HOVERAir’s product marketing is not a substitute for checking the rules that apply where you live or plan to fly. Registration, certification and flight restrictions cannot be generalized across jurisdictions.

What came after the X1

The company’s history says the HOVERAir X1 Pro and X1 Pro Max launched in 2024. They extend the product family, but the original X1 remains the clearest expression of the idea Wang described: use compact sensors and onboard processing to make a camera that can fly itself and film a person.

IEEE Spectrum’s interview-era framing put the decade-long investment at “Some US $80 million invested.” That wording should not be treated as a precise fundraising total or a current company figure. The same article reported several hundred thousand flying cameras sold since X1 shipping began the previous year; that is an interview-era report, not a current sales count.
