Short answer: Grafana Cloud and New Relic have the clearest documentation here for importing dashboard definitions or working with custom data; Datadog documents the most explicit dashboard version-history recovery; and Looker Studio is an adjacent option for reports rather than a direct observability substitute. None is a complete choice on those facts alone: validate the specific data-import path, rollback window, and contractual data-location scope you need before moving production dashboards or telemetry.

What to compare before choosing

A dashboard import usually means importing its definition—queries, panels, layout, and related settings—not uploading the business data those queries will display. Check whether your destination has compatible data sources and whether references must be remapped. Separately, establish what the provider imports as custom data and what remains your responsibility to ingest.

For rollback, distinguish restoring a dashboard definition from restoring telemetry, credentials, data-source configuration, alerts, or permissions. A dashboard history feature may recover only the dashboard itself. For EU-US requirements, a regional hosting choice is evidence to investigate, not by itself proof that every service component, backup, support path, and subprocessor stays within that geography.

How the documented options compare

Service Import and custom-data evidence Rollback evidence EU/US location evidence
Grafana Cloud Imports dashboard JSON, pasted content, or a Grafana.com URL/ID; dashboard references may need mapping to destination data sources. Its Migration Assistant covers dashboards, folders, data sources, and plugins when migrating from Grafana OSS or Enterprise. Grafana dashboard import; Migration Assistant. The cited documentation establishes migration, but not a hosted dashboard-history retention or restore commitment. Confirm a recovery process for your chosen plan and workflow. Not established by the cited sources. Confirm hosting and processing locations, contractual coverage, and feature scope with Grafana.
New Relic Dashboards can visualize custom attributes and events, and its documentation describes custom data from any source. Dashboard JSON import is also documented. Custom data visualizations; Dashboard import and export. The cited sources establish JSON import and editing, not a dashboard-history retention or restore commitment. Validate recovery before selection. New Relic documents US (the default), EU, and Japan organization regions, and assigns region selection to the customer. Features may vary by region. Choose your data center.
Datadog The cited documentation does not establish custom business-data or dashboard-import compatibility for this comparison. Verify the required import path directly. Dashboard versions can be previewed, restored, or cloned. Datadog documents 30 days of version history with Audit Trail disabled and 90 days with it enabled. Restoring makes that version current for all users and creates another history entry. Dashboard version history. Not established by the cited source. Verify regional hosting, processing, and contractual terms.
Looker Studio Report and data-source version history is documented, but this is an adjacent reporting option, not necessarily a substitute for an observability metrics service. Report and data-source history. Prior report or data-source versions can be viewed and restored subject to permissions. Reusable data sources have separate history; embedded sources follow the report. Credential changes cannot be restored through version history. Not established by the cited history documentation. Verify the relevant service and contractual geography separately.

What each option means in practice

Grafana Cloud: dashboard migration with source mapping

Grafana is a plausible shortlist candidate when you already have Grafana dashboards or need to import their definitions. An imported dashboard can refer to data sources that do not exist under the same names or identifiers in the destination, so plan to map and test those references rather than assuming JSON import moves the underlying business data.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For an OSS or Enterprise migration, Grafana’s Migration Assistant documents moving dashboards, folders, data sources, and plugins, with names and UIDs preserved. Treat that as a supported-resource migration aid—not proof that every custom plugin, configuration, or service-side state moves. Check the supported-resource list and validate the migrated workspace.

New Relic: custom events and selectable organization regions

New Relic’s documentation directly addresses dashboards built around custom attributes and events, as well as dashboard JSON import. That makes it relevant where business-specific events are already available to query in New Relic. The sources do not establish an equivalent dashboard rollback guarantee, so test how you would recover a bad edit before relying on it.

Datadog: the clearest documented dashboard history window

Datadog’s cited documentation describes previewing a version before restoring it, or cloning a version. Restoring changes the dashboard for all users, so preview first and coordinate the change if others depend on it. The documented retention is 30 days when Audit Trail is disabled and 90 days when enabled; confirm the account’s Audit Trail configuration and the recovery window it provides.

Looker Studio: useful report history, with separate source behavior

Looker Studio’s history is more relevant to reporting than to a startup seeking a hosted observability platform. Before restoring, identify whether the report uses an embedded or reusable data source: embedded sources follow report history, while reusable sources maintain their own version history. Credential changes are not recoverable through version history and need to be corrected directly.

A safer import and rollback procedure

  1. Preserve the current state. Export or copy the dashboard definition and record its current data-source configuration before editing or importing.
  2. Inventory dependencies. Record dashboard IDs, query references, data-source names, credentials, variables, permissions, and alert dependencies so you can identify what a dashboard restore will not recover.
  3. Test outside production. Import into a non-production workspace or a duplicated dashboard where available. Check that queries resolve, data appears, and permissions and alerts behave as intended.
  4. Map destination sources. For Grafana imports, explicitly map query references to data sources available in the destination and validate each panel.
  5. Verify migration scope. For Grafana Migration Assistant moves, check supported resources and validate dashboards, folders, data sources, plugins, names, and UIDs after migration.
  6. Test recovery before relying on it. For Datadog, preview a prior version and confirm the consequences of restoring it. For other services, obtain and test the specific rollback or export/restore workflow because the cited sources do not establish equivalent history guarantees.
  7. Check what remains separate. Confirm whether credentials, data sources, telemetry, alerts, and permissions have their own backup or recovery mechanisms; a dashboard restore may not include them.

How to verify EU-US data-location requirements

New Relic documents US, EU, and Japan organization regions, with US as the default, and says customers are responsible for selecting the appropriate processing and storage region. Its documentation also warns that feature availability can vary by region. Choose deliberately rather than assuming a newly created organization is in the required location.

A region label alone does not establish that all relevant data or access stays there. Before importing business data, ask each shortlisted provider for the applicable data-processing agreement and current subprocessor list, and establish the scope for:

Questions to settle before purchase or production migration

  • Does the provider import the dashboard definition, ingest the underlying custom data, or support both—and what must be remapped?
  • Can your team preview and restore a prior dashboard state, and what is the documented retention window for your account configuration?
  • Does restore affect all users, and which related objects—data sources, credentials, alerts, permissions, or telemetry—must be recovered separately?
  • Which regions apply to storage and processing for the exact plan and features, and what do the contract, subprocessors, and transfer terms say?
  • Are the required import, region, and rollback capabilities available together in the region and plan you intend to use?

The cited documentation does not establish current plan pricing, full contractual residency scope, transfer/subprocessor terms, or regional parity for every import and rollback feature. Resolve those details with the provider and contract for your intended deployment rather than inferring them from a general product page.
