On most supported Galaxy phones, turn it on at Settings > Connections > Data usage > Data saver > Turn on now. You can allow selected apps to keep using data in the background; exact labels and availability vary by model, software version, region, and connection setup.
What Samsung Data Saver does—and what it does not do
Samsung describes Data Saver as a control that prevents some apps from sending or receiving data in the background. It can help reduce activity when you are not actively using an app, but it is not the same as turning mobile data off. Samsung does not publish a guaranteed savings amount or percentage, so the result depends on which apps use background data and how you use the phone.

Turn on Data Saver
- Open Settings.
- Tap Connections, then Data usage.
- Tap Data saver.
- Switch on Turn on now.
This is Samsung’s commonly documented route, also shown in the Galaxy Z Fold6 EU English user manual. Samsung notes that screens and menu names can differ by model and software version. If your phone’s route differs, search Settings for “Data saver” or consult the instructions for your model.

Allow essential apps to use data in the background
Data Saver can affect apps that need background connectivity. Samsung gives Facebook notifications as an example: they may be delayed or not arrive until you open the app. If an app needs to stay current, add it to the exception list while leaving Data Saver enabled for other apps.
- Open Settings > Connections > Data usage > Data saver.
- Open the allowed-apps list. Depending on the software, it may be called Allowed to use data while Data saver is on or Apps that can always use data.
- Enable the apps that should retain background data access.
Some versions also provide an app-level switch: open Settings > Apps > [app] > Mobile data, then enable Allow app while Data saver on if that option appears. Samsung documents the effects of background restrictions in its Data Saver support guidance.

Check which apps use mobile data
To identify heavy users, open Settings > Connections > Data usage > Mobile data usage. Review the app list, then open an individual app’s mobile-data controls if you want to check its background usage. Where available, Allow background data usage controls data access for that app rather than applying a broad restriction across apps.
Usage shown by the phone is an estimate for the period it measures. To make the view useful, align Billing cycle and data warning with the start of your carrier billing cycle and your plan allowance. Samsung documents these usage controls in its Data usage support material.

Data Saver, app controls, usage limits, and your plan

| Mobile data usage and warnings or limits | Shows usage and, where available, lets you configure a warning or limit for the phone’s measurement period. |
| Carrier allowance | Sets the data included in your plan; the network operator supplies this amount. |
Check your carrier account or contact the operator for your plan’s allowance and billing details. Samsung says that allowance is provided by the network operator; the phone’s usage screen does not determine what your plan includes. Settings for usage warnings or limits may also depend on the SIM, network, and carrier. See Samsung’s data-usage guidance.

If Data Saver is missing or an app still uses data
- No Data Saver menu: Samsung says the option may be unavailable without an active SIM or mobile-network connection, or when the phone is connected to Wi-Fi only. Check the phone’s connection state and the instructions for its model. Samsung also describes this availability issue in its Galaxy Data Saver support page.
- An app still has background access: Check both the Data Saver allowed-app list and that app’s own mobile-data settings.
- Notifications or refresh are delayed: Decide whether that app needs background connectivity, then allow it as an exception or review its per-app background-data control.
- The usage figure does not match your bill: Check that the phone’s cycle dates match the carrier’s billing period, and use the carrier account for the plan’s official allowance and billing usage.
