Yes. A 4GB graphics card can still run some PC games: publishers list 4GB GPUs among the minimum requirements for games including Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced, Madden NFL 26, and Baldur’s Gate 3. That does not promise smooth performance, high settings, or compatibility with every game. The exact GPU model and the rest of your PC matter as much as the memory figure.
What 4GB means in actual game requirements
Official minimum requirements provide concrete examples of games that accept a 4GB graphics card on paper. The recommended tiers for these same games call for more capable GPUs, including models with 8GB of VRAM.
| Game | Minimum graphics requirement | Recommended graphics requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1630 (4GB VRAM) or AMD Radeon RX 6400 (4GB VRAM) | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (8GB VRAM) or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT (8GB VRAM) |
| Madden NFL 26 | AMD Radeon RX 570 (4GB) or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (4GB) | AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT (8GB) or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (8GB) |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 (Windows) | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon RX 480 with 4GB or more | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT with 8GB or more |
These are publisher specifications, not independent performance tests. They show that 4GB is not an automatic barrier to playing a game, but they do not establish frame rates, settings, or results on every system. Rockstar’s GTA V requirements page was updated December 10, 2025, and warns that downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements. Check the publisher’s current page for the game you want.
Minimum requirements do not mean high settings
A minimum GPU is a compatibility threshold, not a promise of the best visual quality. Larian Studios explicitly says that meeting Baldur’s Gate 3’s minimum specifications means you can play with quality concessions; if the frame rate is low, it recommends trying a lower graphics preset in the video options. That guidance is specific to the game, but it illustrates why passing a minimum requirement should not be read as a guarantee of smooth play at high settings.

VRAM holds textures, shaders, and other graphics assets, so memory capacity can limit how much graphical data is available to the game. But a VRAM figure is not a complete measure of GPU performance. AMD’s explanation of VRAM describes its role in gaming, while its examples are tied to particular games, settings, resolutions, hardware, and test dates—not universal evidence that every card with more memory is faster. AMD’s VRAM overview
How to check whether your 4GB GPU can run a particular game
- Find the exact graphics card model and variant. Check whether it is a desktop or laptop GPU and verify the memory amount from the PC or card manufacturer. A product-family name alone may not identify the exact configuration: NVIDIA’s desktop RTX 3050 family page lists 8GB and 6GB configurations, for example, and does not substantiate a 4GB desktop RTX 3050. For laptop hardware, consult the laptop maker’s specifications.
- Open the game publisher’s current PC requirements. Compare your exact GPU against both the minimum and recommended graphics requirements. A model listed at minimum is a stronger indication of compatibility than VRAM capacity alone; a card that meets recommended requirements is the more relevant match if you want the publisher’s higher target.
- Check the rest of the requirements. Compare your CPU, system memory, operating system, graphics API, and storage against the same requirements. Baldur’s Gate 3, for example, specifies an SSD. Meeting the GPU requirement does not make up for a shortfall elsewhere.
- Start with conservative graphics settings if performance is poor. Try the game’s lower preset and adjust from there. The publisher requirements cited here do not supply comparable benchmark results, so no particular frame rate or resolution can be promised for all 4GB cards.
AMD’s Game Explorer documentation offers a useful distinction: its tool labels a system that meets minimum requirements as potentially delivering lower performance and visual quality, and recommends checking the publisher’s website for non-Steam games. The feature applies to games it lists; it is not a universal, current compatibility database. AMD’s Game Explorer and Upgrade Advisor guidance

When 4GB is a reasonable fit—and when it is a warning sign
- It may be enough to try a specific game when that game’s current minimum requirements name your exact GPU or a comparable model and the rest of your PC meets its requirements.
- Expect compromises if your card only matches the minimum. Lower graphics settings may be necessary, and the requirement alone does not guarantee a particular frame rate.
- Be cautious when recommended requirements ask for 8GB GPUs. The examples above show that a publisher can set a 4GB minimum while recommending an 8GB card. That gap signals a higher target, not proof that every 4GB card will fail.
- Do not choose or upgrade by VRAM alone. Compare the named GPU models and the full system requirements; memory capacity by itself does not establish which card is faster overall.
What these examples can—and cannot—tell you
The named requirements establish that some publishers accept specified 4GB cards at minimum. They do not measure how well those cards perform, prove that all 4GB GPUs are interchangeable, or establish how many games a 4GB card can run. There are no comparable benchmark figures here from which to infer FPS or performance across the three games. For an individual decision, use the exact game’s current publisher requirements and treat minimum and recommended as different targets.
