That was a specific result in supervised robotic suturing—not evidence that a robot outperformed surgeons at surgery overall or improved outcomes for human patients.
What did STAR do better?
STAR performed an intestinal anastomosis: stitching together the cut ends of intestine. In its account of the experiment, IEEE Spectrum said researchers compared the robot with experienced human surgeons on the same task. The reported advantage was that STAR’s sutures were more consistent and more resistant to leaks.
Those measures describe the suturing result, not a comprehensive comparison of surgical skill. The finding does not establish that STAR was faster, safer across all procedures, or better at making the decisions involved in an operation.
Where and how was the experiment conducted?
The study tested STAR on ex-vivo tissue and in an anesthetized pig, according to IEEE Spectrum. The paper describes the work as supervised, autonomous in-vivo soft-tissue surgery in an open surgical setting, and characterizes it as preclinical. It was not a human clinical trial.

STAR used plenoptic three-dimensional and near-infrared fluorescent (NIRF) imaging alongside an autonomous suturing algorithm. The system was designed to track soft tissue and place sutures in a dynamic environment; the experiment was a proof of concept for that defined task, not routine hospital deployment.
How autonomous was the robot?
“Autonomous” did not mean that researchers were absent. IEEE Spectrum reported that researchers intervened to provide guidance in about 40 percent of STAR’s trials; it completed the other 60 percent without that intervention. Human-applied NIRF tags also helped the robot track the intestinal tissue.

The result is best understood as supervised autonomy: the robot carried out suturing, but the experimental setup still involved human guidance and preparation.
What does the result mean for surgery?
The experiment showed that a robot could perform a delicate, repetitive soft-tissue suturing task and achieve stronger reported results on selected measures in that comparison. It did not show that autonomous systems can replace surgeons, operate independently on patients, or improve clinical outcomes. The paper’s preclinical setting and the absence of a human trial are important boundaries on what can be concluded.

Clinical relevance was also questioned by outside expert Blake Hannaford, whom IEEE Spectrum quoted saying: “Clearly the task they chose does not justify the elaborate equipment they used.” Hannaford’s comment is a critique of the task’s significance, not a finding from the study. The report also quoted pediatric surgeon and study researcher Peter Kim: “Even though we surgeons take pride in our craft at doing procedures, to have a machine that works with us to improve outcomes and safety would be a tremendous benefit.” That expresses a potential motivation for the research, not evidence that patient outcomes had improved.
