Before China’s 2021 crackdown, the country became the leading center of Bitcoin mining because operators could pair access to specialized mining hardware with low-cost electricity. The advantage was not simply that China had abundant power: miners also moved within the country to follow seasonal electricity conditions. That history does not mean China is still home to the biggest mining operations today.
What Bitcoin mining operations do—and why location matters
Bitcoin mining operations run specialized computers that compete to add blocks to the Bitcoin blockchain. The machines are application-specific integrated circuits, or ASICs, built for the computations used in Bitcoin mining. Because mining requires substantial electricity, power costs can strongly affect whether an operation is viable. Access to mining equipment and the infrastructure to run it also matter.
A peer-reviewed study in Nature Communications identified both proximity to specialized hardware manufacturers and cheap electricity as factors behind China’s historical concentration of mining. It reported that China accounted for more than 75% of Bitcoin network hashing power in the pre-crackdown period it examined; that is a historical estimate from the study, not a current share. Why miners moved within China with the seasons
China’s mining map was not static. Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance described miners and equipment shifting from Xinjiang in the dry season toward Sichuan in the rainy season, when hydropower was abundant and could be cheaper. Cambridge estimated that Sichuan’s share of China’s Bitcoin mining power rose from 14.9% at the beginning of the 2020 wet season to 61.1% at its peak. Those figures describe the change during that particular season, not a permanent share or a measure of China’s current mining activity.
Hydropower did not make all Chinese Bitcoin mining renewable
Seasonal use of Sichuan hydropower is only part of the energy story. Cambridge’s model estimated that coal supplied 36.6% of Bitcoin mining energy and hydropower 14.9% in January 2022. These are modeled shares for that month, not a province-by-province breakdown or a statement about today’s energy mix; mining’s electricity sources vary by location and period. Accordingly, the presence of hydropower in one region or season is not enough to describe the emissions impact of mining across China. A reliable regional comparison would need consistent information about electricity sources, prices, and the time period being measured.

China’s 2021 restrictions triggered a major relocation of mining activity out of the country, so the historical concentration should not be presented as a current ranking. Later Cambridge estimates indicated a partial rebound in China’s mining activity, however; the initial fall to near zero did not prove that activity never returned. Those estimates draw on sampled facilities and mining-pool data rather than a census, so they should be read as estimates, not a complete count. The clearest answer to “Why did Bitcoin miners move to China?” is therefore historical: China’s combination of hardware access and low-cost power helped attract miners, while seasonal shifts let some operators pursue different electricity opportunities within the country. The 2021 crackdown then changed the geography again. The evidence cited here does not establish which country currently has the largest mining operations.
