Drones can give conservation teams detailed views of habitats and wildlife, while artificial intelligence (AI) can help sort images, identify possible species and flag patterns for people to check. Together, they can make monitoring more efficient—but they do not automatically prove population trends, stop wildlife crime or replace ecological expertise and community partnerships. Their value depends on good data, careful validation and a practical response to what they detect.

How are drones used in wildlife conservation?

Drones collect aerial imagery that can help teams map habitat, observe animals and survey places that are difficult or risky to reach on foot. The useful level of detail depends on the conservation question: a broad habitat map and an image intended to distinguish individual tree species do not require the same resolution or workflow.

A drone is one part of a survey system, not a complete monitoring program. Teams need to decide what to observe, where and when to collect data, how to check the results, and who can act on them. Flights also require suitable equipment, trained operators, permissions and a plan for battery life, data storage and connectivity.

Can AI identify animals from drone images?

AI models can be trained to detect or classify patterns in images, including possible animals or habitat features. That can help process large image collections more quickly and surface candidates for review. A model’s output is an identification to verify—not ground truth. Its reliability depends on the quality and relevance of its training and validation data, as well as conditions such as habitat, lighting and image quality.

AI also supports conservation work that does not use drones. WWF describes Wildlife Insights as a way to analyze camera-trap images and says its SpeciesNet model is freely available. That is a separate camera-trap application, not a drone-specific model. IUCN’s July 2023 discussion warns that models trained on poor or geographically mismatched data can produce false positives and false negatives. Both kinds of error matter: false alarms can divert limited staff, while missed detections can obscure wildlife or threats.

What do current drone and AI conservation projects show?

Amazon rainforest mapping and biodiversity monitoring

In an April 6, 2026 field account, Conservation International described a pilot expedition in the Peruvian Amazon that combined AI-assisted drone mapping with camera traps, acoustic recorders, environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling and insect-monitoring technology. The organization reported that drone imagery was detailed enough to identify tree species from above. The pilot illustrates a possible workflow, but it is not evidence of a validated, landscape-scale solution.

Each method observes something different: aerial imagery shows visible habitat structure; camera traps record animals passing a point; acoustic recorders capture vocal activity; and eDNA sampling can detect genetic traces in water. Combining them can build a richer picture than any one sensor alone, although it also creates more data to manage and interpret.

Bird surveys using aerial imagery and machine learning

A 2026 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service project account hosted by USGS describes partners developing deep-learning detection and classification models for whooping cranes using aerial imagery and reference observations. The account says later approaches began using drones to identify and count waterfowl and bird guilds at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge and along the Atlantic and Texas coasts.

Not all of the imagery in that project was drone-derived. The account reports that about 450,000 digital aerial images at 1-centimeter spatial resolution were collected from three coastal Texas refuges in January 2025 using a seven-camera array on a single-engine turboprop aircraft. That figure describes crewed-aircraft data collection, not drone coverage.

Thermal cameras and wildlife-crime alerts

WWF describes FLIR thermal-camera systems that use AI alerts to flag movement by people, wildlife or vehicles. The system’s purpose is to help operators and rangers notice events and respond; a detection is not itself an intervention. WWF’s account describes communications infrastructure and ranger training alongside the cameras, highlighting the operational work needed to turn an alert into action.

WWF reports no poaching incidents at Ol Pejeta since 2017 and at Solio after the system was switched on in late 2023. These are organization-reported outcomes at particular sites, not independent proof that AI alone caused the results or that the same outcome will follow elsewhere. WWF also reports that 11 rhino sites in Kenya use FLIR cameras and equipment in some capacity; its Kifaru Rising project account says all 11 priority reserves were using FLIR technology in some form, reporting through 2024.

AI for patrol planning

IUCN describes PAWS, the Protection Assistant for Wildlife Security, as a system that uses protected-area information and previous patrol and poaching data to generate patrol-route recommendations, then incorporates subsequent data. This is a planning application, not a drone system. Recommendations still need to be assessed against local knowledge, ecological context and changing conditions.

Method Useful for observing Important qualification
Drones and aerial imagery Visible habitat structure and aerial views that may support wildlife surveys Coverage, image detail, disturbance, flight range, permissions and validation affect whether a survey is suitable.
Camera traps Animals passing a fixed camera location AI can help process images, but identifications need quality checks and geographically relevant data.
Acoustic recorders Vocal activity They capture sound, not a complete census of animals in an area.
Environmental DNA sampling Genetic traces, such as those detected in water It provides a different kind of evidence from direct visual observation.
Thermal cameras with AI alerts Heat-associated movement by people, wildlife or vehicles An alert needs communications, trained staff and an appropriate response protocol.

These methods are complementary, not interchangeable. Before choosing one, define the target—habitat structure, presence, abundance, behavior, vocal activity or human intrusion—and the evidence needed to answer the question. Then assess coverage and resolution, wildlife and human safety, data quality, field logistics, governance and response capacity.

What can go wrong when drones and AI monitor wildlife?

Models can make consequential mistakes

Test a model using locally relevant data and reference observations before relying on it operationally. Check both false positives and false negatives, and keep a person with conservation expertise involved when decisions could affect enforcement or species management. IUCN emphasizes partnerships across the process, from data work through deployment.

Flights and sensors can affect wildlife and people

Wildlife disturbance, flight range, regulation and validation are among the constraints identified in a 2015 USGS-cataloged review of unmanned aircraft in wildlife research. That review is useful for understanding the issues, but it does not establish current flight rules for a particular place. Check the applicable requirements and assess potential disturbance before fieldwork; local legal requirements cannot be inferred from a general conservation example.

Data collection raises governance questions

Images, movement records and other observations can raise privacy, surveillance and data-control concerns. IUCN and WWF identify transparency, fairness and the rights of communities and wildlife as considerations. WWF also discusses Indigenous data rights and says it is examining AI’s environmental footprint. Projects should establish who can access and control data, what may be collected, how it can be used and shared, and what limits apply.

Field systems need maintenance and a response plan

Connectivity, power, storage, repair, staff capacity and training can determine whether a monitoring system works beyond a demonstration. For a threat-alert system, decide in advance who receives an alert, how it is verified, what action is appropriate and what happens when communications fail. WWF’s thermal-camera account illustrates why infrastructure and ranger capacity belong in the system design alongside the sensor and model.

How should a conservation team plan a drone-and-AI project?

  1. Define the decision. Specify what the team needs to learn or do, such as mapping habitat change, checking for a species or directing a patrol. Do not begin with a drone or AI model and assume it will answer the right question.
  2. Choose evidence and sensors. Match the observation method to the target. Aerial imagery, camera traps, acoustics and eDNA capture different kinds of information; combine them when they answer complementary questions and the team can manage the added workload.
  3. Check feasibility and permissions. Assess access, flight conditions, likely wildlife disturbance, power, communications, storage, maintenance and available skills. Verify local flight requirements for the project’s location rather than assuming a rule from another jurisdiction applies.
  4. Set data and validation rules. Decide how observations will be labeled, who will review model outputs, how local training and validation data will be obtained, and how false detections will be recorded. Establish community and Indigenous data rights, access controls and privacy boundaries before collection.
  5. Connect findings to action. Assign responsibility for interpreting results and responding to alerts or survey findings. Plan for staff training, communications failures and system repair, and review whether the chosen method is producing evidence useful to the conservation decision.

What is the likely direction for drones and AI in conservation?

The documented examples point toward integrated, locally grounded monitoring: aerial mapping or surveys combined with AI-assisted analysis, other sensors, human review, field infrastructure and conservation expertise. They do not establish a general improvement in conservation outcomes, accuracy or cost savings from combining drones and AI. Those benefits depend on the question, data, place and response system, and should be measured within each project rather than assumed.
