For a Shopify store, the simplest no-code order tracking system is Shopify’s built-in fulfillment and order status flow: attach a carrier and tracking number to each shipment, then customers can follow it from the order status page, shipping email, or Shop app. Add an automation tool only when staff also need a separate operations log, alerts, or handoffs to other apps.
Choose where order and shipment records will live
If your orders already live in Shopify, use Shopify as the source of truth for fulfillment and customer tracking rather than starting with a parallel customer-facing database. Its order status page and related tracking surfaces use the shipment information recorded in Shopify fulfillment data.
If you use another ecommerce platform, check whether it provides fulfillment records, carrier and tracking fields, a customer status page, and notification controls. The steps below describe Shopify; they should not be assumed to match every platform.
Build the customer tracking flow in Shopify
1. Capture the carrier and tracking number
When you buy a shipping label in Shopify, the tracking number can be added automatically. If you ship using a carrier outside that label-purchase flow, enter the carrier and tracking number manually. A fulfillment app or service may send those details through its Shopify integration; confirm that with the provider.

For a useful internal record, make the order, fulfillment status, carrier, tracking number, and a link to the tracking destination easy for staff to find. The essential customer-facing step is that the fulfillment record contains the tracking details.
2. Give customers a status destination
Shopify describes the order status page as the primary place customers track deliveries. Customers can reach it through their account, the link in a shipping confirmation email, or by entering an order number and completing the requested identity verification. The Shop app can also provide shipment status updates and push notifications; eligible shipments with supported carriers may show a live map and estimated delivery date. Those map and date features are not guaranteed for every carrier or shipment. Shopify notes that an order without a tracking number can be marked delivered after receipt; without that step, its status may remain “On its way.”
3. Configure notifications without duplicating them
In Shopify admin, configure customer and staff notifications for the events relevant to your operation. Shopify supports customer emails for order, shipping, and account events; SMS order confirmations for customers who provide a phone number in supported countries; staff alerts; and webhooks for external workflows. Email templates can include dynamic order and customer information, and notification events can be configured. Details are in Shopify’s notification documentation.

A practical setup sends a clear shipping message when tracking is ready. Check whether your fulfillment app also sends customer messages so the same event does not trigger duplicates. The right message timing depends on your workflow.
Add a no-code operations log only if staff need one
Shopify’s admin may be enough when the sole goal is customer tracking. If your team needs a separate table, alerts, or a task handoff to other tools, an automation service can copy order events into a work app such as Airtable or Google Sheets.

Zapier documents Shopify triggers including new order and updated order, and workflows that create records or notify team tools. Its setup documentation says Shopify is a premium app and requires a paid Zapier plan, as well as an active Shopify store. Check Zapier’s Shopify integration page for current access and trigger details, since plans and available triggers may change.
A separate log is an operational aid, not a replacement for Shopify’s fulfillment record when Shopify is the customer tracking destination. Monitor automations for failed or duplicated records, and avoid sending customers duplicate notifications from both Shopify and an automation.

Keep external fulfillment systems synchronized
If a warehouse or external order management system ships orders while Shopify provides the customer experience, ensure the shipment details and fulfillment status write back to Shopify. Shopify’s developer documentation explains that its customer-facing order status, tracking links, transactional emails, Shop app, and related features derive shipping and delivery information from Shopify fulfillment data: Shopify’s order management app guidance. If the external system does not update Shopify, customers may not see shipment updates there, and staff may lack the status in Shopify admin.

The choice turns on your existing commerce platform, carrier and fulfillment integration coverage, customer notification needs, whether staff need a separate operations record, and the ongoing cost and maintenance of integrations.
