Dutch police tested whether trained birds of prey could intercept unwanted drones, but the experiment did not become an operational capability. By December 2017, police had ended the effort, citing limited demand, greater-than-expected training costs and complexity, and doubts about whether the birds would perform reliably outside controlled training.
How the Dutch police drone-eagle project worked
The concept was that a bird would treat a drone as prey, seize it, and carry it away from people and other birds. In coverage of the test phase published on February 1, 2016, project spokesman Marc Wiebes described the intended outcome: “The bird sees the drone as prey and takes it to a safe place, a place where there are no other birds or people.” DutchNews reported on the demonstration, in which a bird grabbed a drone and carried it to the ground.
The idea was presented as one possible way to address unwanted drones, alongside other concepts mentioned at the time, including high-tech capture systems and equipment intended to take control of a drone. The reporting does not establish that those alternatives were adopted.
Why did police stop training the eagles?
On December 6, 2017, Dutch broadcaster NOS reported that police had stopped the effort after more than a year. Police cited limited demand and training that proved more expensive and complex than expected. They also questioned whether the birds would act reliably beyond a controlled training environment. NOS reported the decision and the reasons attributed to police.

This versatile net gun handles wildlife rescue, farm protection, and security duty at schools, hospitals & events. También conocida como pistola de red
The contrast was between a promising controlled demonstration and the practical demands of using birds reliably in real conditions. The available reporting does not establish a cost total, a capture success rate, or a precise start and end date for every training activity.
Did the eagles ever intercept drones at events?
No interception is reported. The birds attended events in Rotterdam and Brussels, but NOS said they were not deployed to take down a drone. Their presence at those events should not be mistaken for operational use.

It runs steadily between -20°C to 60°C, sustaining stable performance in frigid, high-temperature and other harsh outdoor conditions
Was this an ongoing Dutch police capability?
No. The police disclosure index describes a project to train and use birds of prey to intercept drones, and lists records concerning planning, event exercises, acceptance tests, a TNO report, bird protection, and deployment protocols. That archive confirms the project’s subject, but an index alone does not establish the contents or outcomes of every listed record. The Dutch police archive provides the disclosure index.
Some linked records are not available through that index, so the accessible material does not substantiate further details about test protocols or animal-protection outcomes. It supports the historical account of a trial that ended in 2017, not a claim that police still use eagles for counter-drone work.

How does this relate to police drones?
A separate Dutch parliamentary document says police had been testing and training with their own drones since 2015. That is general context about police-operated drones; it is not evidence about the eagle project or a continuation of it. The parliamentary document describes that separate police-drone activity.
