Its main buying caveat is that it requires an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub; it is not a direct-to-phone or universal Zigbee sensor. Aqara’s five-year battery figure is conditional, and the company’s US and European product pages disagree on the battery type.
What the Aqara Motion Sensor P1 does
The P1 (model MS-S02) uses passive infrared (PIR) sensing to detect motion and also reports ambient-light state. It communicates over Zigbee 3.0 through a compatible Aqara hub, which then makes the sensor available to supported automations and smart-home services. Aqara describes it as a sensor for alerts and automations, rather than a standalone alarm.
Aqara lists the sensor at 33.1 × 33.1 × 41.6 mm and 33 g, with an approximate detection distance of 7 m. Its product page specifies a field of view of 170° up to 2 m and 150° up to 7 m; another Aqara specification gives an approximate 170° detection angle. These are manufacturer figures, not independently verified room-coverage measurements. Actual coverage depends on placement and the room.
Do you need a hub, and what does it work with?
Yes. The P1 requires an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub. Aqara’s manual says Apple HomeKit use also requires an Apple Home Hub. Aqara’s US product page lists HomeKit, Alexa and IFTTT; its Europe page additionally names Google Home through a connected Aqara hub and says the hub is not compatible with other brands. Aqara cautions that third-party integrations can vary by region. Check the compatibility details for your region and hub before buying; do not assume the P1 can pair directly with any Zigbee hub.

Settings and useful automations
Timeout and sensitivity
In Aqara Home, the detection timeout is adjustable from 1 to 200 seconds, and sensitivity has three levels: high, medium and low. Timeout determines how long the sensor waits before it can report a subsequent motion event. A longer interval may reduce repeated triggers, while a shorter one can make motion events available sooner; the setting that suits you depends on the automation.
Using the light sensor
The ambient-light reading can be used alongside motion in an automation—for example, turn on a light when the sensor detects movement and brightness is below a chosen threshold. Aqara gives 30 lux as an example threshold, not a fixed limit; the value can be configured.

How to set it up and place it
- Install an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub and set it up in Aqara Home. For Apple HomeKit use, Aqara’s manual also calls for an Apple Home Hub.
- In Aqara Home, add the P1 through the connected Aqara Zigbee hub, following the app’s pairing prompts.
- Mount it at Aqara’s recommended height of 1.2–2 m. The sensor comes with a holder and sticker.
- Avoid pointing it at heat sources: Aqara warns that infrared interference can cause false triggers.
- Choose a stable mounting surface. Aqara warns the supplied sticker may loosen on smooth, moist, hot, rough or uneven surfaces.
Battery life and the CR2450/CR2430 discrepancy
Aqara advertises up to five years of battery life, with an important qualification: its product page says that figure can be achieved with LED indication turned off and detection timeout set to at least 30 seconds. This is a manufacturer claim under those settings, not a guaranteed lifespan or an independently measured result.
Aqara’s regional pages conflict about which cells the P1 uses. The US specifications and comparison table list two CR2450 batteries, while the detailed battery block on Aqara’s Europe page lists two CR2430 cells. Check the packaging or manual supplied with your exact regional unit before buying replacements; the regional webpage alone is not a safe basis for selecting a battery.

The P1’s listed adjustments are useful if you want control over how often motion can trigger an automation or how sensitive detection is. The hub requirement remains central to the decision, and the battery-type discrepancy is worth resolving for the exact unit you plan to buy.

Is the Aqara Motion Sensor P1 worth considering?
It is a plausible option if you already use—or are prepared to install—a compatible Aqara hub and want motion plus ambient-light sensing with adjustable timeout and sensitivity. If you need a sensor that pairs with any Zigbee coordinator, or need a firmly established battery type before purchase, the available Aqara information does not settle those needs. Aqara publishes the feature and coverage claims, but no independent controlled test or hands-on basis is established here for verifying range, battery endurance, false-trigger rate or comparative reliability.
