Choose Semrush if you want daily keyword-position updates or need conventional web and social mention monitoring; choose Ahrefs if weekly rank checks suit you and its location-based tracking model fits your workload. They are not direct substitutes for every kind of “mention”: Semrush Brand Monitoring covers news, blogs, discussion sites, and social channels, while Ahrefs Brand Radar focuses on visibility in search and AI-generated answers. Neither vendor’s feature claims establish that its rankings are more accurate, so compare both against the same keywords, locations, devices, and dates before committing.

What each tool tracks

“Keyword monitoring” can mean tracking where a site appears in search results, watching what people publish about a brand, or checking whether a brand appears in AI answers. Semrush and Ahrefs offer different tools for those jobs, and their metrics should not be treated as interchangeable.

  • Search rankings: Semrush Position Tracking and Ahrefs Rank Tracker monitor keyword positions in search results.
  • Press and social mentions: Semrush Brand Monitoring is the relevant product in this comparison; it gathers mentions from sources including news, blogs, discussion sites, and social channels.
  • AI-answer visibility: Ahrefs Brand Radar tracks visibility in its search and AI indices, including AI Overviews and chatbot-related coverage. That is not comprehensive press or social listening.

Semrush vs Ahrefs at a glance

Decision factor Semrush Ahrefs
Rank-tracking cadence Position Tracking describes daily ranking updates. Rank Tracker updates weekly by default.
Tracked-keyword allowance in the listed plans Pro: 500; Guru: 1,500; Business: 5,000 tracked keywords per day, according to Semrush’s pricing page. Lite: 750; Standard: 2,000; Advanced: 5,000 tracked keywords, according to Ahrefs’ pricing page. Ahrefs counts a keyword separately for each location and project.
Locations and devices Position Tracking describes coverage across locations and devices. Semrush says up to 20 competitors can be added; plan eligibility and limits should be checked. Rank Tracker describes mobile and desktop tracking across 190+ locations, from country to city and ZIP code, and comparison with 10 competitors.
Brand monitoring Brand Monitoring covers web and social mentions and offers alerts and metrics such as sentiment, estimated reach, and backlinks. Brand Radar measures visibility in its search and AI indices; it should not be read as a broad media-monitoring tool.
Vendor-displayed monthly price snapshot Pro: $117.33; Guru: $208.33; Business: $416.66. These are monthly equivalents billed annually, as displayed on Semrush’s pricing page. Lite: $129; Standard: $249; Advanced: $449. Ahrefs’ pricing page displays these amounts; billing, tax, region, and add-ons may affect the checkout total.

Prices and allowances are vendor-page values accessed on October 5, 2026, not independently normalized quotes. Bundles differ, so compare what each plan includes and confirm current terms on the linked Semrush pricing page and Ahrefs pricing page.

How often do Semrush and Ahrefs update rankings?

Semrush: daily Position Tracking updates

Semrush says Position Tracking provides daily ranking updates. That can help when you want to review movement frequently, such as during an active campaign. The update schedule describes the tool’s cadence; it does not prove that its positions are more accurate than Ahrefs’. See Semrush Position Tracking for the vendor’s description.

Ahrefs: weekly Rank Tracker updates by default

Ahrefs says Rank Tracker updates weekly by default. For many ongoing SEO checks, a weekly view may be sufficient; if you need daily monitoring, verify whether the available settings and plan meet that requirement. An update schedule is not an accuracy comparison. See Ahrefs’ Rank Tracker help article for its explanation of tracking and keyword calculations.

How to compare tracked-keyword limits

A plan’s headline allowance is useful only when you calculate your actual workload the way the service does. Semrush lists daily tracking quotas by plan. Ahrefs counts each keyword-location-project combination as a tracked keyword, so tracking three keywords in two locations uses six tracked keyword units for a project. Ahrefs says keywords above the limit freeze until you buy capacity or remove keywords.

For example, a local business tracking 100 keywords in three cities should check whether its selected Ahrefs plan can accommodate the resulting 300 keyword-location units, before considering any additional projects. Do not compare that total directly with a Semrush allowance without confirming the relevant plan rules and setup.

Where location, device, and competitor coverage matter

Rank tracking is useful only if its setup resembles the searches you care about. Check whether you need country-level monitoring or finer city and ZIP-code targeting, whether desktop and mobile results must be separated, and how many competitors you need to benchmark. Ahrefs describes mobile and desktop tracking across 190+ locations and comparison with 10 competitors. Semrush describes tracking across locations and devices and says Position Tracking can include up to 20 competitors. Confirm availability and plan eligibility for your account before building a large tracking set.

Both products’ vendor pages describe ranking and competitor features, but the number of locations or competitors alone does not establish which tool will produce the better decision for a particular site. Set the same target locations, devices, keywords, and competitors in each product when evaluating fit.

What “mentions” means in each product

Semrush Brand Monitoring: web and social coverage

Semrush Brand Monitoring is a separate app from Position Tracking. Its help documentation says it can monitor a brand, competitor, person, keyword, or backlink; gather mentions from news, blogs, discussion sites, and social channels; send alerts; and show measures such as sentiment, estimated reach, and backlinks. The same help page lists a subscription at $79 per month for three queries and describes separate mention-limit add-ons. These are vendor-stated, changeable terms, so confirm the current price, query limits, and source coverage on Semrush Brand Monitoring’s help page.

Ahrefs Brand Radar: search and AI-answer visibility

Ahrefs Brand Radar documents Search Demand and Web Visibility indices along with AI Overviews and AI chatbot indices. Update schedules vary by index: the documentation describes some as updating every few days or minutes, while the chatbot index updates monthly; custom prompts have their own selected frequency. These measures address visibility within the covered search and AI data, not general news and social mention capture. See Ahrefs Brand Radar documentation for its current index and update descriptions.

How to choose for your workflow

Pick Semrush Position Tracking for daily movement

Semrush is the more natural fit if daily position updates are a requirement and its daily allowance, locations, devices, and competitor capacity match your account. If “mentions” means press or social coverage, assess Brand Monitoring separately rather than assuming it is included in the rank-tracking workflow.

Pick Ahrefs Rank Tracker for weekly monitoring and explicit location accounting

Ahrefs can suit a workflow built around weekly checks, particularly when its stated location coverage and keyword-by-location-by-project accounting are helpful for planning capacity. Calculate the allowance before choosing a plan, especially when you track multiple markets or projects.

Choose by evidence when accuracy is decisive

The vendor documentation reviewed here does not establish an independent ranking-accuracy winner or prove complete mention capture for either service. Run a short comparison with the same fixed keyword list, locations, devices, competitors, and dates. Record the reported positions and observed mention sources, and check the results that matter to your own reporting rather than relying on database size or feature counts.

What the plans cost in the dated snapshot

The vendor pricing pages accessed on October 5, 2026, displayed the following plan figures. These are not a like-for-like normalized quote: plan bundles, billing terms, taxes, regional pricing, and add-ons can differ.

Service and plan Displayed monthly price Tracked keyword allowance Other displayed context
Semrush Pro $117.33, billed annually 500 daily Five monitored websites
Semrush Guru $208.33, billed annually 1,500 daily Fifteen monitored websites; historical data and multi-location/device data listed
Semrush Business $416.66, billed annually 5,000 daily Forty monitored websites; share of voice and API access listed
Ahrefs Lite $129 750 Five projects; Rank Tracker included
Ahrefs Standard $249 2,000 Twenty projects; additional historical data and features listed
Ahrefs Advanced $449 5,000 Fifty projects; longer history and expanded features listed

Use the official Semrush and Ahrefs pages to verify current prices and plan details before purchase. Do not divide the monthly price by the keyword allowance and treat the result as a complete value comparison: the plans include different features and project or website limits.
