An edge-lit LED TV is an LCD television whose LED backlights sit along the screen’s edge. Those LEDs light the LCD panel, which forms the picture. In the common TV label “LED,” the term describes the backlight—not individual LED picture pixels.
What does edge-lit mean on a TV?
In an edge-lit design, LEDs are placed around the display’s edge and direct light inward across the screen. The liquid-crystal display (LCD) panel controls that light to create the image. LG’s comparison of edge-lit, direct-lit and full-array TVs describes the LEDs as facing the center of the screen.
Edge-lit describes the backlight arrangement, not a guarantee of picture quality or a particular feature set. Whether a specific TV has local dimming, and how it performs, depends on that model’s specifications.
How edge-lit compares with other TV types

These are general design distinctions, not a guarantee that every TV in a category performs alike. LG’s screen technology explainer distinguishes LED-backlit LCD sets from OLED, which does not need an LCD backlight. Its comparisons describe design trade-offs rather than independent tests of particular models.

Is edge-lit better than full-array?
Neither label alone determines which TV is better for you. Edge lighting can support a slimmer set, while full-array local dimming can control light in more targeted zones and may produce deeper blacks in dark scenes. The advantage depends on the exact models and their features, including whether local dimming is present. Compare manufacturer specifications rather than assuming every edge-lit TV dims or that every direct-lit set has full-array local dimming.
