Zend PHP certification may be worthwhile if you already work with PHP and want a structured review plus a formal way to show assessed language knowledge. It is not a substitute for project experience, and the available evidence does not show that it guarantees a job, higher pay, or an employer’s preference. Zend’s current materials cover PHP through 8.4, but they do not clearly state the exam’s current price or logistics, so verify those details before booking.
What the current Zend PHP certification covers
Perforce Zend calls the credential the Zend PHP Certified Engineer certification. Its current exam page says the assessment covers topics through PHP 8.4 and recommends that candidates have “an established and working knowledge of PHP.” The published scope includes core PHP, functions, data formats and types, web features, object-oriented programming, security, input/output, strings and patterns, databases and SQL, arrays, and error handling. See the Zend PHP Certification Exam page for the current outline and preparation links.
That breadth is useful context for judging the commitment: this is a language-wide assessment, not an introductory PHP course or a test focused on one framework. Zend also offers a study guide covering core concepts and best practices through PHP 8.4, alongside training options.
Pros of Zend PHP certification
It can give your PHP study a structure
If your day-to-day work uses only part of PHP, the syllabus can help you identify areas to review, such as security, SQL, data formats, input/output, or error handling. This is a practical benefit of the published breadth, not a measured guarantee that taking the exam will improve performance at work.

It provides a formal signal of assessed knowledge
A pass gives you a credential you can list on a résumé or professional profile. Zend says successful candidates receive a badge and certificate to showcase the achievement, and presents the certification as a way to distinguish candidates to prospective employers. That describes Zend’s intended value proposition; it is not independent evidence that recruiters consistently reward the credential. See Zend’s Career in PHP: Strategies to Advance Your Skills.
You can try a free practice exam first
Zend’s practice page offers a free sample exam with 10 questions covering the same broad topics as the live test. Zend describes the questions as a way to become familiar with the format and gauge the exam’s breadth and depth. They are a diagnostic sample, not the live exam’s question count. The page says the sample assumes intermediate-to-advanced PHP development skills. Try the Zend PHP certification practice exam before deciding whether you need paid preparation.
Cons and limitations
A pass does not prove production experience
An exam can assess knowledge, but passing alone does not demonstrate that you can design, ship, debug, or maintain a complete application; make trade-offs; or collaborate on a software team. SitePoint made a similar distinction in a 2014 article about the older PHP 5.5 exam, updated in 2024. That article is useful for the general difference between exam performance and applied work, but it is not an assessment of the current PHP 8.4 exam: SitePoint’s Zend PHP certification review.
The scope may require reviewing topics outside your role
The wide syllabus can be an advantage if you want a systematic refresh, but it can also mean substantial preparation in areas you rarely use. Zend’s stated prerequisite of working PHP knowledge and the practice test’s intermediate-to-advanced assumption both indicate that the exam is intended for people with experience, rather than as a first step in learning PHP.

Current exam logistics need confirmation
Zend’s current exam and practice pages do not state the live exam’s price, duration, or question count. An older Zend FAQ describes a 75-question, 90-minute exam based on PHP 200-710 and mentions delivery details, but that version basis conflicts with the current pages’ PHP 8.4 coverage. Treat the FAQ’s figures and delivery information as legacy, not confirmed rules for the refreshed exam. Check the Zend FAQ alongside the current exam page, then confirm the terms with Zend before paying or scheduling.
Does Zend PHP certification help you get a job?
It may help you present PHP knowledge in a formal, recognizable way, but the available sources do not establish a hiring, salary, or promotion advantage. If you are job hunting, treat the credential as one supporting signal rather than proof of job readiness. Pair it with code samples, a portfolio, project explanations, and concrete evidence of work you have delivered or maintained.
Who should consider it?
- Consider taking it if you already have working PHP experience, want a broad review, and have a specific reason to present a formal PHP credential to an employer, client, or team.
- Start with the free sample if you want to judge the topic breadth and sample format before committing to preparation.
- Prioritize practical evidence if your main goal is demonstrating that you can build and maintain software; the certification alone cannot show that.
- Wait to book until Zend confirms the current price and exam conditions you need to know.
How to decide whether it is worth the effort
Compare the credential with your goal rather than assuming one certification is universally best. A PHP language exam may suit a broad language review; a framework- or database-specific credential would have a different scope. Before choosing, consider:
- Whether you need language-wide coverage or a narrower framework or database focus.
- Whether the current version coverage fits your work and learning goals.
- Whether you want structured study, an external signal, or both.
- The confirmed total cost and preparation time.
- Whether you can show hands-on work alongside the credential.
- Whether the exam is currently available to you and its confirmed delivery rules.
The reviewed sources do not establish current terms for other certification categories, so compare specific alternatives using their current official information rather than assuming their cost or value.
