To add office functionality to a web app with ONLYOFFICE, embed its browser-based editors using the Docs API or build a host integration around WOPI. In either case, your application still owns document storage, file permissions, and document management; the editor is not a replacement for those parts of your app.
What ONLYOFFICE provides—and what your app must provide
ONLYOFFICE Docs supplies browser-based editors for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDFs, and fillable forms. Its Docs API lets a web app load and configure those editors. You can load editors from the ONLYOFFICE Docs Cloud CDN or install the self-hosted solution; choose based on operational needs such as control, network access, and maintenance. The vendor documentation cited here does not establish current pricing or comparative service guarantees. See ONLYOFFICE’s basic concepts.
The application remains responsible for the surrounding document workflow. Typically, your document manager selects a file and supplies its identity and URL in the editor configuration. The Docs service retrieves the document from that URL and handles editing-related services, while your storage remains under your control. Your app must continue to manage files, permissions, and metadata; embedding an editor does not provide those functions. The ONLYOFFICE architecture overview describes the division of work.
Choose an integration route
| Route | What your app must do | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Docs API | Configure the editor in your web app and provide the document identity and URL. | A host that wants the direct documented editor-integration route. |
| WOPI | Implement the WOPI host protocol, discovery, iframe session, access-token parameters, proof-key verification, and supported file operations; enable WOPI in Docs configuration. | A host whose architecture and protocol expertise suit a WOPI-based integration. |
ONLYOFFICE documents WOPI support beginning with Docs version 6.4; this is the vendor-stated compatibility threshold, not a statement of the current release. Review the WOPI overview and WOPI FAQ before choosing that route. The FAQ lists these host-side operations: CheckFileInfo, GetFile, Lock, RefreshLock, Unlock, PutFile, and RenameFile.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For the Docs API, ONLYOFFICE provides language-specific examples for .NET, Java, Java Spring, Node.js, PHP, Laravel, Python, Ruby, and Go. Use the integration samples as a starting point, not as a finished production integration.
Plan the document flow and network access
Before implementing the editor, identify where documents, permissions, and metadata live. Then make sure the Docs service can retrieve documents from the URLs your app supplies and that your application can reach the configured Docs service endpoints for the required interactions. ONLYOFFICE’s integration FAQ advises checking reachability from both sides. Network rules, URL accessibility, and save handling need to match your deployment rather than assuming that a browser-visible app URL is also reachable by the Docs service.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Map the responsibilities. Record which service owns each file, who can open or edit it, and how document identity and metadata are represented.
- Select the integration route. Use the Docs API for the direct editor configuration path, or WOPI if you are prepared to implement its host protocol.
- Configure reachable endpoints. Verify that the Docs service can fetch the configured document URLs and that your application can communicate with the Docs service.
- Adapt an official example. Start with a language sample that matches your stack, then add your own authorization and validation before exposing it to users.
- Test saving and access control. Exercise authorized and unauthorized file access, normal saves, and invalid or altered requests in your application’s deployment environment.
Secure the integration before launch
ONLYOFFICE documents JWT tokens signed with a shared secret between the integrator and Docs. In the documented flow, Docs validates the token and rejects a missing or invalid token. Configure token validation and keep the shared secret protected; see the ONLYOFFICE security documentation.
The official examples demonstrate integration mechanics, but the vendor warns that they lack production authorization, parameter-substitution checks, and complete save-request validation. The samples page states: “DO NOT USE these examples on your own server without PROPER CODE MODIFICATIONS!” Add authorization checks for each document operation, validate parameters, and verify save requests against your application’s rules before production use.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
WOPI has additional host-side security work. Enabling the protocol does not itself secure the data flow: configure access restrictions, filter trusted integrators as appropriate, and validate signed requests and proof keys according to the WOPI documentation and WOPI FAQ.

If your app is built on an established content-management or collaboration platform, a supported connector may be more practical than a custom bridge. ONLYOFFICE’s connector list includes Alfresco, Chamilo, Confluence, Drupal, HumHub, Liferay, Mattermost, Moodle, Nextcloud, Nuxeo, Odoo, ownCloud, Plone, Redmine, SharePoint, Strapi, SuiteCRM, and WordPress. Check the integration FAQ and the connector’s current instructions: availability and compatibility can depend on the platform release.
