Optimum currently advertises 300 Mbps for $30/month, 500 Mbps for $40/month, and 1 Gig for $50/month, but those are eligible-offer prices—not the standard rates for every customer. Check your address and the checkout terms before choosing.

Optimum says its advertised speeds are for wired connections; actual speeds, including over Wi-Fi, can vary and are not guaranteed. Its page also says speeds on unlimited-data packages may be reduced during local network congestion. The advertised monthly prices reflect an eligible Auto Pay and Paperless Billing discount, and taxes and fees may apply. See the offer terms for details.
Which Optimum speed is right for your household?
Optimum’s recommendations are useful starting points, not independent performance tests. Actual experience depends on the connection at your address, Wi-Fi conditions, devices, and how your household uses the internet.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
300 Mbps: moderate use and multiple HD streams
Optimum says 300 Mbps is more than adequate for moderate internet use and HD video streaming on multiple devices. Consider it if your household mostly browses, streams HD video, and makes routine video calls rather than routinely moving very large files.
500 Mbps: multiple 4K streams and a connected home
Optimum positions 500 Mbps for multiple 4K Ultra HD streams and fully connected homes. It is the middle advertised tier for households with several concurrent users or smart-home devices.
Rank #2
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
1 Gig: heavier use and many connected devices
Optimum describes 1 Gig as suited to ultra-connected home networks. The advertised wired download speed is up to 940 Mbps, rather than a full 1,000 Mbps. Choose it for a clear household need, such as heavy simultaneous activity; a larger speed number alone does not guarantee better Wi-Fi coverage.
Multi-gig: only when the address and workload justify it
Optimum lists service up to 8 Gig in select areas. Its standard rate card places 2 Gig, 5 Gig, and 8 Gig on fiber with symmetrical download and upload speeds, but that does not mean those tiers are offered at every address. They are most relevant when a household can use very high throughput and has compatible network equipment; verify both availability and total price first.
Rank #3
- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Optimum Advantage Internet: a lower-priced eligibility-limited option
Optimum’s Advantage page lists 100 Mbps for $15/month, plus taxes and fees, and also shows a separate 300 Mbps offer. The page says equipment and installation are included, but the offer is not available everywhere and eligibility applies. Check the offer details rather than assuming you qualify. (Optimum: Advantage Internet)
Cable or fiber: check the connection at your address
Optimum’s main offer page describes its showcased tiers as fiber-powered, while its standard rate card separately lists cable and fiber services. The cable rate card gives download speeds, while the fiber section lists symmetrical download and upload speeds. Do not assume the network type or upload speed from the plan name: ask what is actually available at your service address.

Optimum reports that its fiber-to-the-home network passed approximately 3.1 million homes and businesses in 2025, and that multi-gig symmetrical tiers were available to substantially all of its FTTH customers. That company-reported network figure provides scale, not proof that a particular home can order fiber. (Optimum Communications, Inc., 2025 Form 10-K: SEC filings)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare your actual Optimum offers
- Enter your service address on Optimum’s internet page to see locally available plans and the offer presented for your home.
- Confirm whether the offer is cable or fiber and record both advertised download and upload speeds. Do not infer symmetrical uploads unless the offer says so.
- Compare the full recurring cost: the price during any discount, what happens when it ends, and taxes and fees. The public offer page does not establish a complete checkout total for every address.
- Check Auto Pay and Paperless Billing eligibility, offer duration, and whether the deal applies to a new or existing customer.
- Review equipment and installation terms shown for that offer, including any monthly equipment charge. The standard rate card’s equipment charges may not match current promotional terms.
- Choose the lowest tier that covers your household’s simultaneous usage and any specific upload or throughput need, rather than paying for capacity you will not use.
What to know about equipment and final costs
Equipment terms depend on the offer. Optimum’s materials describe a supplied gateway and a Wi-Fi extender if needed, while the internet page also describes optional Whole Home WiFi. The standard rate card has its own equipment section and charges; do not assume those legacy rate-card charges apply to a current promotion. Confirm the exact equipment, installation, and recurring charges in the terms attached to your address-level offer. (Optimum: internet plans; rate card; Optimum offers)
