A DAC may be built into a phone, computer, or sound system, so a separate external DAC is not automatically necessary.
What does a digital audio converter do?
A digital-to-analog converter receives digital values and produces an analog output. Analog Devices defines a DAC as a data converter that receives a stream of numbers and outputs a voltage or current proportional to those values (Analog Devices’ D/A Converter glossary).
For audio playback, the basic path is digital audio data → DAC → analog output → amplifier or headphone/speaker system. The DAC performs the conversion; it is not necessarily the amplifier, headphones, or speakers. An audio DAC processes the digital signal and reconstructs it as an analog signal for the downstream playback equipment, as HP’s overview of DACs explains.
Where is the DAC in a playback setup?
DAC functionality can be built into devices such as laptops, phones, sound cards, and Hi-Fi systems. In that case, the device provides the conversion needed for its analog audio output. External DACs are another option: they connect to a digital source and provide an analog output, often through a headphone jack. Compact USB and USB-C dongles are one common form of external DAC (Focal’s DAC explanation).

A separate DAC can be useful when a source does not provide the analog connection you need, or when you need a different output or connection arrangement. Whether an external unit is appropriate depends on the equipment and connections in your setup; the fact that it is a dedicated DAC does not, by itself, establish that it will sound better.
DAC vs. ADC: playback and recording
A DAC converts digital data into analog output for playback. An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) does the reverse: it turns a continuously varying analog signal into digital numbers (Analog Devices’ overview of ADCs and DACs).

- Complete Accessories: Includes USB charging cable, optical cable, and PC-USB to Type-B cable. Ensures hassle-free setup and immediate use. Seamless connectivity for various devices. (Note: No microphone input.)
An audio interface can include both kinds of conversion. It can convert incoming analog sound, such as a microphone or instrument signal, into digital data for computer recording, and support playback conversion as well. Interfaces may connect to a computer through USB, Thunderbolt, or Ethernet, depending on the device (Focusrite’s explanation of audio interfaces).
- Choose a DAC when your need is digital-to-analog playback output.
- Consider an audio interface when you also need recording inputs and analog-to-digital conversion.
What to check when choosing a DAC or interface
Specifications describe a converter’s capabilities and compatibility. They do not, on their own, demonstrate an audible improvement. Analog Devices identifies interface, resolution, channel count, and voltage or current output as important data-converter considerations (Data Converter glossary). For a real audio setup, check:

Resolution refers to the number of digital input bits available to represent the analog output (Analog Devices’ converter overview). Treat that and other specifications as technical capability information; a specification alone is not proof of a particular listening result.
