A cracked phone back can often be replaced, but the right repair depends on the exact phone model and whether its rear panel is glass or a complete back cover. Identify the model before buying parts or following a guide: parts, disassembly steps, tools and post-repair checks vary. If the back is bulging rather than simply cracked, stop—on the Galaxy S25, a bulging cover may signal a swollen battery and needs to be treated as a safety issue.
First, identify the damage and the exact phone
“Phone back” can mean a glass panel bonded to the frame or a complete back cover. A cracked back glass is not the same repair as a loose or bulging cover, and not all phones have glass backs. Find the phone’s exact model and variant in its settings, original packaging or manufacturer account, then use instructions and parts listed for that device. The Galaxy S25 back-cover guide specifically warns that a bulging cover may indicate battery swelling. If you see swelling, do not press, heat or attempt an ordinary rear-glass replacement; seek qualified service.
Guides for one model do not establish a safe procedure or compatible part for another. Samsung likewise directs users to the repair guide for the appropriate model. Its US repair guidance recommends authorized genuine parts and cautions that third-party parts may not function properly. Check the exact part number and whether a listing is genuine, compatible aftermarket or unverified before ordering.
Choose DIY or professional repair

A careful DIY repair is most appropriate when you have the correct model-specific instructions, compatible parts, suitable tools and the experience to work safely. Choose a repair professional if any of those are missing, damage extends beyond the back, or maintaining water resistance is important. Cost and turnaround depend on the phone, region, provider and coverage; get a local quote rather than relying on a universal estimate.

Prepare safely before opening the phone
Back up important data, power off the phone, disconnect cables and follow the preparation instructions for your exact model. Battery-charge advice differs by guide: the iPhone 15 and Galaxy S25 repair instructions call for draining the battery below 25%, while Samsung Ireland’s general instructions call for a fully discharged battery. Follow the relevant model-specific procedure rather than combining these into a single rule.
Broken glass can cut you or scatter during removal. Samsung’s US guidance describes using safety goggles, cut-resistant gloves and an acrylic protective cover to contain debris; Samsung Ireland also recommends safety equipment and a ventilated work area. iFixit advises covering cracked glass with tape—overlapping packing tape for badly cracked glass in its iPhone 15 guide—and notes that tape can help a suction cup grip the surface.

Check the complete preparation section of the applicable guide. Samsung Ireland warns that leaving the SIM tray inserted during disassembly may damage the device. Its instructions also call for a backed-up, powered-off phone and appropriate protective equipment; these are regional instructions, not a substitute for checking the guide for your own model.
Use the right adhesive, tools and procedure
Rear panels are often held by adhesive, and the cited iPhone 15 and Galaxy S25 guides require replacement adhesive. Match the adhesive to the exact model and panel; a generic sheet is not established as a fit for all phones. Model-specific procedures may also require opening picks, a suction cup or handle and a suitable heating tool. Samsung’s guidance lists a heating bag, suction cup and opening picks alongside protective equipment.

Heat softens adhesive, but applying it carelessly can damage a phone. For the Galaxy S25, iFixit describes heating with an iOpener for two minutes or using a hair dryer or heat gun; its guide warns that improper heat-gun use can destroy the display or battery. The iPhone 15 guide says not to heat beyond “hot to the touch,” because the battery is susceptible to heat damage. These are model-specific instructions, not a universal temperature or heating recipe. Do not improvise one.
Follow the exact opening path and tool depth in the guide. For the Galaxy S25, iFixit cautions that the opening pick should be inserted only slightly near the cameras to avoid damage. After removing the panel, that guide advises inspecting and testing functions before resealing, cleaning camera smudges with a lint-free cloth and aligning the replacement adhesive with the panel’s cutouts and contours.

Check function and sealing after replacement
Do not assume a successful rear glass replacement restores factory water resistance. Samsung Ireland states: “IPXX performance cannot be guaranteed when it is repaired by user or non-skilled person.” That warning applies to the regional Samsung guidance; it is not a claim that every model has the same IP rating or repair procedure. If water resistance matters, ask a qualified provider what it can verify and avoid exposing a repaired phone to water based on its original rating.
Some repairs also affect specific functions. On the iPhone 17 Pro, iFixit says the back glass includes the wireless charging unit and wireless charging may have issues until Apple Repair Assistant is run after replacement. This is a model-specific consideration, not a universal iPhone or Android requirement. Check the guide for the exact phone and test the functions it identifies before closing or returning the device to regular use.
