When a deadline is close, keep code review moving without treating speed as permission to rubber-stamp. Agree which issues must block a change, make work easy to review, and respond promptly at natural breaks in focused work. Google Engineering Practices offers one documented model: approve changes that clearly improve code health, even when they are not perfect.
Why deadlines can make review worse
A review that sits unanswered can hold up other work. Google Engineering Practices also warns that delays can increase pressure to accept weaker changes simply to move forward. That is the deadline trap: the team waits, the deadline approaches, and a rushed approval starts to look like the only way out.
Faster responses help reduce uncertainty, but they are not the same as instant responses or shallow reviews. Google advises reviewers to respond at a natural break rather than interrupting focused coding. A team can preserve both flow and scrutiny by making the response expectation clear and giving authors an update when a full review must wait.
Agree on what should block approval
Google’s standard is to favor approval once a change definitely improves the system’s overall code health, even if the change is not perfect. That is a useful alternative to holding every change until it matches a reviewer’s personal ideal. It does not mean overlooking a serious defect: correctness, safety, or a consequential design problem can still justify blocking approval.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Separate essential fixes from lower-priority feedback. If a comment is a preference or a minor improvement rather than a release-blocking concern, record it without holding the change when you are confident it will be handled appropriately. Google’s speed guidance explicitly allows approval with comments in suitable cases. Make the distinction visible in the comment itself—for example, say whether an item is required before approval or is a follow-up suggestion.
Make each change reviewable
Focused changes give reviewers a clearer task and make it easier to find consequential issues. A Google-authored excerpt in Software Engineering at Google identifies small changes as an important practice for nimble code review; it does not set a universal line-count limit. Split work when doing so preserves a coherent sequence, rather than shrinking a change just to meet an arbitrary number.

When a change is too large to review soon, Google recommends asking whether it can be divided into smaller dependent changes. If splitting is impractical, give early high-level feedback so the author can act while the detailed review continues. Useful context—what the change is meant to do and where the risky parts are—also helps reviewers spend attention where it matters.
Set response norms without creating interruptions
Google Engineering Practices says the maximum time for a first response should be one business day, describing that as first thing the next morning. This is Google’s guidance, not a universal service-level rule. Teams should choose a local expectation that accounts for time zones, staffing, working schedules, and the urgency of the change.

A first response need not be a completed review. If you cannot review fully, acknowledge the request, give a realistic estimate, or help find another reviewer. That simple update gives the author information to plan around without asking reviewers to abandon focused work whenever a notification arrives.
In practical terms, a team norm can say: acknowledge review requests within the agreed window; do the review at a reasonable work break; and communicate promptly if the full review will take longer. Treat that as a locally adapted protocol, not a Google-mandated formula.

Protect the dimensions of quality that matter
A good review is broader than a bug hunt. Google’s overview identifies design, functionality, complexity, tests, naming, comments, style, and documentation as areas reviewers may assess. Under deadline pressure, use those dimensions to guide attention rather than reducing the review to “does it compile?”
- Design and functionality: Does the change fit the system and deliver its intended behavior?
- Complexity and tests: Is the implementation understandable, and is important behavior adequately covered?
- Naming, comments, style, and documentation: Can future maintainers understand and use the change?
The priority of each dimension depends on the change. A serious correctness or safety concern can block; a low-impact style preference usually should not hold up otherwise healthy work. Reviewers should also recognize what is done well, not only list problems. Deadline pressure is a reason to be explicit about risk and priority, not a reason to stop reviewing.

Turn the principles into team practice
Google’s recommendations are one organization’s guidance, not a measured deadline playbook that every team must adopt. A team can adapt them into a short working agreement:
- Keep changes focused. Split work into smaller dependent changes where that makes review clearer; do not impose an unsupported universal line limit.
- State the review expectation. Choose a first-response window that fits the team’s coverage and time zones, and clarify that acknowledgment is not the same as completed review.
- Mark blocking feedback. Tell the author which issues must be addressed for approval and which are suggestions that can be handled without delaying the change.
- Review at natural breaks. Avoid disrupting focused work for every request, but provide an update or arrange another reviewer if a full review cannot happen in time.
- Judge the improvement, not perfection. Approve when the change clearly improves code health and remaining feedback is not important enough to block it.
