You can speak to an AI agent in two different ways: use the agent’s own voice mode for a spoken conversation and, where supported, agent actions; or use your laptop’s dictation to turn speech into text that you review and submit as a regular prompt. The right choice depends on whether you want an actual voice conversation or simply less typing.
Choose voice conversation or speech-to-text
An agent’s built-in voice mode is designed for speaking and hearing replies. In some products it can also start or coordinate work, subject to the same tools and permissions available to that agent. General dictation is different: it enters words into the selected text field, but does not by itself give the agent a spoken reply or control its tasks.
- Choose the agent’s voice mode when you want spoken responses or voice-based interaction with supported agent features.
- Choose laptop or app dictation when you want to compose a prompt by speaking, then submit it as text.
- Choose voice-control features when you need to operate parts of the computer by voice, not just dictate text.
Use voice with ChatGPT Work or Codex
OpenAI documents Voice with Work on web and mobile, and with Work or Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS and Windows. In the desktop app, select Work or Codex, then use the Voice control or a shortcut configured in Settings. Allow microphone access when prompted. If the task needs computer context, Screen & Audio Recording and Accessibility permissions may also be required. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work and Codex guide.
Voice can start or coordinate tasks in supported experiences, and you can follow along with live text. In Work, a task can continue in text after the voice call ends. Access depends on the plan, workspace permissions, and selected experience. As OpenAI puts it, “Voice uses the tools and permissions available to the selected experience.” Voice does not bypass the agent’s underlying permissions or action controls. On web and mobile, actions requiring approval still need on-screen approval; spoken approval is not supported.

Dictate a prompt on Windows 11
Windows 11’s built-in voice typing converts speech to text using online speech recognition. Click or tap the prompt field where you want text to appear, then press Windows logo key + H and speak. You can also start it from the microphone on the touch keyboard. Check the transcription before submitting, especially for names, numbers, code, and instructions that could trigger consequential actions. Microsoft’s speech, voice activation, inking, typing, and privacy guidance explains the feature and its privacy settings.
Sharing voice clips to help improve speech recognition is optional. Microsoft says work or school account users can still use voice typing when voice-data sharing is unavailable.

Copilot voice is a separate feature
Windows voice typing only enters text; it is not a spoken Copilot conversation. Microsoft separately documents voice conversation in Copilot on Windows, including an optional “Hey Copilot” wake word when enabled and while the PC is unlocked. Microsoft describes availability as a rollout through its Frontier program at the end of 2025, so check whether it is available for your device and account rather than assuming every Windows 11 PC has it. Microsoft says Copilot voice audio is not stored and its transcripts are managed like regular Copilot conversations. Details appear in Microsoft’s Windows and Microsoft Copilot Chat documentation.
Dictate on a Mac
macOS Dictation types speech at the current insertion point in an app. Place the cursor in the agent’s prompt box, start Dictation using the microphone key or your configured keyboard shortcut, and speak. Review the result before sending. Availability varies by language and region; Apple explains how to use the feature in Dictate messages and documents on Mac.

Use Voice Control for spoken computer commands
Voice Control can dictate text and control the Mac with spoken commands. It is not simply another name for Dictation: Apple notes that standard Dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is on. Choose it if your goal is to operate the computer by voice, rather than only enter a prompt.
Use ChatGPT dictation when you want editable text
ChatGPT also documents app-level dictation: record speech, receive a transcription as editable text, and send it when you are ready. This can be useful if you want to check the wording before it becomes a prompt. It is a text-entry workflow, not the same thing as a live voice conversation. See OpenAI’s Voice Dictation FAQ.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- Omnidirectional Microphone - It is not a Speaker or Speakerphone, it is a condenser microphone. The microphone has an omnidirectional pickup pattern with a pickup distance of 11.5 ft, making it easy to capture the most subtle sounds from 360° directions and transmit the sound more loud and clear. Participants can hear each other without raising their voices.
- Made for Conferences - This microphone is perfect for small or medium meetings over an internet network by using Skype/GoToMeeting/WebEx/Hangouts/Fuze/VoIP/Zoom and other softwares. You can also use it for court reports, seminars, remote training, business negotiations, video chats, etc.
- Plug & Play, No Drivers Required - The microphone is compatible with all operating systems - both Windows and macOS. You just need to plug the microphone to start recording. If there is no response after inserting the mic, please go to the microphone setting of your computer and select the mic as the INPUT device.
- Convenient Mute Button - Quickly mute/unmute your microphone. The built-in blue indicator light for checking whether the USB microphone is working.
- Well Designed Cable - The microphone is constructed of sturdy and metal material and the base is fitted with an anti-slip mat which keeps it stable on desktop during use. It is small, convenient and does not require much space when in use. Connected with a 1.8m nylon shielded wire, it effectively eliminates signal interferences to achieve the best recording results.
- ChatGPT Voice: OpenAI says Live and Advanced Voice audio/video clips are stored with the chat transcript and retained for 30 days. After you delete the chat, associated clips are deleted within 30 days, subject to stated security, safety, legal, and prior-sharing exceptions. OpenAI says Standard audio is deleted after transcription unless you chose to share it for training. See ChatGPT Voice.
- ChatGPT dictation: OpenAI says dictation audio remains while the chat is in history and is deleted within 30 days after chat deletion, subject to stated exceptions. Consumer audio use for model improvement depends on your sharing choice; OpenAI says business inputs and outputs are not used for training by default. These are distinct policies for distinct modes, not a single rule for all voice data. See the Voice Dictation FAQ.
- Windows voice typing: Microsoft says it uses online speech recognition and makes contribution of voice clips optional. Voice activation in supported apps is a separate permissioned feature; third-party apps manage data under their own privacy policies.
- Copilot voice: Microsoft says audio is not stored and transcripts follow regular Copilot conversation policies.
- Mac Dictation: Apple points users to its privacy controls and says users can choose whether to share audio recordings to improve Siri and Dictation. Its Mac support page does not establish that processing is local in every language, OS version, or configuration; consult Apple’s current privacy controls for your setup.
Make spoken prompts easier to use
- Speak in short, complete instructions, then pause so the system can transcribe them.
- Review names, numbers, code, file paths, and high-impact instructions before submission. Speech recognition can mishear words, and OpenAI cautions that ChatGPT can make mistakes.
- Try the laptop’s built-in microphone first. A USB headset with a microphone is optional; the cited documentation does not establish that an external headset is required or improves recognition.
- If the agent has no voice mode, dictation can still save typing in its prompt field, but it will not add agent-specific voice controls.
