Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →HD means high definition: a category of digital video formats with more picture detail than conventional standard-definition television. It is not one specific resolution or file type. Labels such as 720p and 1080i identify more precisely how an HD picture is made and displayed.
What does HD mean in digital video?
HD stands for high definition. The ATSC glossary defines HDTV as having approximately twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of conventional television, with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio. That is a broad definition, not a single required pixel count: an HD signal can use different resolutions and scanning methods.
For clarity, use the full format label—such as 720p or 1080i—rather than relying on “HD” alone. The label tells you more about the picture than the general category does.
What do 720p, 1080i and 1080p mean?
The number refers to the image’s vertical resolution class; the letter describes how the picture is scanned. “p” means progressive, while “i” means interlaced.

| Format | Pixel dimensions | Scan method |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 1280 × 720 | Progressive |
| 1080i | 1920 × 1080 | Interlaced |
| 1080p | 1920 × 1080 | Progressive |
The dimensions and scan descriptions for 720p and 1080i are given in an ITU publication from 2014. The distinction between 1080 resolution and progressive or interlaced scanning is also supported by the cited format references. These labels alone do not establish a universal frame or field rate. In some production and broadcast specifications, a rate is appended—for example, 24, 25, 30, 50 or 60—but the applicable rate depends on the source or device specification.
How is 720p different from 1080i?
Both are HD formats, but they differ in resolution and scan method. A 720p picture has 1280 × 720 pixels and is scanned progressively. A 1080i picture has 1920 × 1080 pixels and is scanned interlaced. The format names do not, by themselves, tell you which will look better in every situation: the source, display, processing and stated signal rate also matter.

Does HD Ready mean a display can receive HD channels?
Not necessarily. A screen’s native panel resolution, its ability to accept an HD input signal, and its ability to receive and decode an HD broadcast are separate capabilities. The cited ITU material describes HD Ready displays as accepting 720p or 1080i signals under specified label requirements. Spain’s government digital television portal likewise distinguishes a display able to show HD signals from an HDTV receiver that can receive and decode them. Those label descriptions are tied to particular markets and periods, not a universal current rule.
Check the device specifications for its panel resolution, supported input formats, and tuner or receiver capabilities. A television that displays an HD signal is not automatically equipped to receive every HD broadcast service.

What does Full HD mean?
Full HD commonly refers to a display resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. It describes the panel’s pixel dimensions; it does not, on its own, specify the broadcast tuner, supported codec, frame rate, or input formats. Check the product specification for those details.
What should you compare when checking an HD format or device?
- Pixel dimensions: Check the actual resolution, such as 1280 × 720 or 1920 × 1080.
- Scan method: Identify whether the format is progressive (p) or interlaced (i).
- Rate: Use the frame or field rate only when it is stated for that particular signal or device.
- Capability being described: Confirm whether the specification refers to the panel, accepted inputs, or broadcast tuner and decoding support.
For engineering or broadcast implementation, consult the relevant edition and part of the ATSC A/53 digital television standard. The applicable details can depend on edition and jurisdiction.
