Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Connect each SFF-8643 backplane port you intend to use to a compatible SAS HBA or RAID controller with an internal multilane cable whose connectors match both ends. Use SFF-8643-to-SFF-8643 when the controller has SFF-8643 ports, or SFF-8087-to-SFF-8643 when it has SFF-8087 ports. Four sockets on the backplane do not, by themselves, mean you must connect all four: check the exact backplane and controller manuals for port mapping and required link count.
Identify the backplane and controller first
- Find the backplane model. Check its label or system documentation, then consult its manual to determine whether it is a direct/pass-through backplane, an expander design, or supports discrete SATA point-to-point connections.
- Identify the host interface. Confirm whether the motherboard’s onboard SAS controller, HBA, or RAID card has SFF-8643, SFF-8087, or another connector. The cable must match the host connector as well as the backplane connector.
- Check port mapping and link count. Use both manuals to determine which sockets connect to which drives or backplane groups, how many links are needed, and what topology is supported. Do not infer the required count from the four sockets alone.
- Connect power separately. Follow the backplane manual for its power leads; the data cables described here do not establish the power requirements.
Choose the cable for the host connector
| Host/controller connector | Cable path | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| SFF-8643 | SFF-8643 ↔ SFF-8643 internal multilane cable | Use when the controller and backplane manuals support this connection. Supermicro lists HD-to-HD cables for supported HBA/backplane connections in its BPN-SAS3-836EL Backplane Manual. |
| SFF-8087 | SFF-8087 ↔ SFF-8643 internal multilane cable | Use when the controller and backplane manuals support this connection. Supermicro also lists iPass/SFF-8087-to-HD/SFF-8643 cables in the same manual. |
| Motherboard SATA ports | Four SATA plugs ↔ SFF-8643 reverse-breakout cable | Only for a backplane that supports discrete SATA point-to-point connections. In this arrangement, the four SATA ends go to motherboard SATA ports and the SFF-8643 end goes to the backplane, as described in Supermicro FAQ 28879. |
If using motherboard SATA ports, verify breakout direction
A SATA motherboard connection is not interchangeable with a SAS HBA multilane connection. For the reverse-breakout arrangement documented by Supermicro, connect the cable’s four SATA plugs to motherboard SATA ports and its SFF-8643 plug to the backplane. The backplane must support this discrete SATA arrangement. Supermicro identifies an internal Mini-SAS HD SFF-8643-to-four-SATA cable on its CBL-SAST-0704 product page. Confirm the cable direction and backplane compatibility before connecting; a forward-breakout cable is not a substitute.
Do not assume all four ports are required
The number of links depends on the backplane wiring, controller, drive grouping, and intended bandwidth. As one hardware-specific example, Supermicro FAQ 34732 describes connecting a Broadcom 9560-16i to a particular backplane with one SFF-8654-to-two-SFF-8643 cable; it says one cable is sufficient for that combination and two may improve throughput. That example is not a universal rule for other controllers or backplanes. Follow the port map in your own hardware documentation.

Orientation and common connection errors
- Do not buy by the backplane connector alone. Match both ends of the cable to the controller and backplane, then verify that their manuals support the connection.
- Do not add a crossover cable to a normal SFF-8643/SFF-8087 multilane link. Supermicro FAQ 19449, dated 2014-10-08, says the same multilane cable can be used between Mini-SAS HD (SFF-8643) and Mini-SAS (SFF-8087), regardless of whether the backplane is passive or an expander. Its crossover caveat concerns some multilane-to-SATA configurations, so do not apply that statement to every SATA breakout cable. Read the Supermicro FAQ on cable orientation.
- Do not confuse data and power. SFF-8643 cabling handles the storage data connection; use the backplane’s specified power connections as a separate step.
