You can make a custom iPhone ringtone in GarageBand from an eligible audio file or an eligible Apple Music library track. Import the audio, trim an excerpt to 30 seconds or less, and export it using Share > Ringtone. “Any song” has limits: an Apple Music song must be downloaded to your iPhone, and Apple says protected tracks cannot be used as ringtones.
Before you start: check that the song is usable
Apple’s documented on-device method uses GarageBand. You can import an audio file available through Files or choose a song from your Apple Music library. Apple Music songs must be downloaded to the iPhone, and a protected track is not eligible for ringtone use. A subscription does not remove that restriction. See Apple’s custom ringtone instructions.

Choose a short passage—the hook or opening phrase, for example—because a custom ringtone can be no longer than 30 seconds. GarageBand can offer to shorten a longer export automatically, or you can trim the passage yourself.
Create and export the ringtone in GarageBand
- Open GarageBand. If it is not installed, download it from the App Store. Start a new audio recording, switch to Tracks, then open the Loops Browser. Apple’s labels and screen layout may vary with the app release or device; its instructions do not specify a version-by-version iOS 27 interface matrix. Follow Apple’s GarageBand ringtone workflow.
- Choose your audio. In the Loops Browser, browse in Files for a local or iCloud audio file, or choose Music for an eligible Apple Music library song. A dimmed Music entry may be undownloaded or protected; check its download status first.
- Add the audio and select the excerpt. Drag the file or song into the Tracks area. Drag the region’s edges to trim it; zoom in if you need finer control. Move the region to the far left of the track so the ringtone does not begin with unintended silence.
- Export as a ringtone. Return to My Songs, select the project, tap Share, then Ringtone. Name the ringtone and tap Export. If the excerpt exceeds 30 seconds, GarageBand offers to shorten it automatically; you can cancel and trim it yourself instead. Apple’s GarageBand sharing guide also documents the ringtone export limit.
- Choose how to use it. After export, tap Use sound as and choose Standard Ringtone, Standard Text Tone, or Assign to contact. Choose Done if you want to leave it unassigned for now. GarageBand may ask for Contacts access when you assign a sound to someone; see Apple’s Contacts access information.
Change the ringtone or assign it to a contact later
To change the general ringtone later, open the iPhone’s ringtone settings and select the sound. To use a different ringtone for one person, open Contacts, select the person, tap Edit, tap Ringtone, and choose a sound. Apple’s iOS 27 iPhone guide covers ringtone selection and contact-specific tones.

Troubleshoot a dimmed song or failed export
- The Apple Music song is dimmed: Check whether it has been downloaded to this iPhone. If it is downloaded but remains protected, Apple says it cannot be used as a ringtone. Choose an unprotected audio file you can access instead.
- The ringtone starts late: Return to Tracks and move the audio region all the way to the left, removing blank space before the clip.
- The export is too long: Trim the region to 30 seconds or less, or accept GarageBand’s offer to shorten it during export.
- You cannot assign the tone to a contact: GarageBand may need Contacts permission for this step. Apple describes that access prompt here.
Alternative: buy a ringtone from the Tone Store
If you do not have an eligible audio file or library track, the Tone Store is a separate option for purchasing tones. Apple notes that availability and features can vary by country or region; see Use tones and ringtones with your iPhone or iPad.
