There is no single default password for every MikroTik router or switch. Earlier devices typically use the username admin with a blank password; newer units have a unique factory password printed on the device or its packaging. Check the label and the guide for your exact model before trying a reset.

Which default password should you try?

MikroTik’s current guidance distinguishes between device generations: earlier devices typically use admin with no password, while newer devices have a unique factory password for each unit. Current setup instructions likewise specify admin with either an empty password or the password printed on the device label, if applicable. MikroTik’s default-password guidance explains the distinction.

Device situation Login to try What to keep in mind
Earlier MikroTik device Username admin; leave the password blank This is typical of earlier devices, not a universal credential for current models.
Newer MikroTik device Username admin; use the password on the device-specific label The factory password is unique to the device.
Custom-branded or OEM device Check the device and supplied documentation Its default credentials may differ from standard MikroTik guidance.

Older CRS switch quick guides also document admin with no password, but that is model-specific historical guidance, not proof of the credentials for every MikroTik switch. For a RouterOS-powered switch, use its own label and included guide.

Where to find the factory password

  1. Inspect the device label. Look for the serial-number sticker and password on the unit.
  2. Check the packaging. The box may have a matching sticker.
  3. Look in the Quick Guide. Check the materials supplied with the device.
  4. Inspect a product-information compartment, if present. Some indoor wireless models, including the hAP ac³ and hAP ax³, have a small compartment containing the sticker.

MikroTik says the factory password is printed on physical materials and is not stored in an online system. If those materials are missing, contact the distributor that supplied the device. Give them its serial number and the seller or shop details; MikroTik says a distributor can retrieve the factory password from its database.

How to troubleshoot a MikroTik login

  1. Identify the exact model and connect locally. For the router setup described in MikroTik’s quick-start guidance, connect your computer to an Ethernet port other than ether1. Follow the guide for your specific device. MikroTik’s Getting Started instructions provide the current setup context.
  2. Try the appropriate login. Use the username admin. For an earlier device, try an empty password; for a newer one, use the password on its label.
  3. Check all the supplied materials. Inspect the device, box, Quick Guide and any product-information compartment.
  4. Ask the supplying distributor to look up the password. Provide the serial number and seller details before considering a reset.
  5. Check whether you can restore the configuration. Confirm whether a backup exists and whether you can recreate your ISP, LAN, Wi-Fi and firewall settings if necessary.

If you still cannot access the unit, consult documentation for its exact model before using a reset button or reinstalling RouterOS with Netinstall. Reset procedures can vary by device, so do not rely on button timing from instructions for a different model.

What happens if you reset the device?

A MikroTik password recovery reset is not a password-only change: it clears the configuration and restores factory defaults. That can remove network settings you need to reconnect or manage the device. MikroTik lists a full configuration reset or reinstalling RouterOS with Netinstall as fallback recovery paths when the password cannot be retrieved. See MikroTik’s Configuration Management documentation for reset behavior, and use the exact model’s guide for the procedure.

Do not reset until you know whether you have a configuration backup or can rebuild the settings. If the password is merely missing, distributor lookup may avoid losing the existing configuration.

Secure the device after login

  • Set a strong, unique administrator password. MikroTik recommends a minimum of 12 characters using numbers, symbols, uppercase and lowercase letters. This is vendor security guidance, not a guarantee against every attack.
  • Use unique administrator accounts rather than sharing one account, and do not reuse passwords.
  • Retain the default firewall rules unless you have a clear, secure replacement plan.
  • Avoid exposing management services directly to the internet.
  • Review MikroTik’s guidance on securing your router and first-time configuration.
