The historical AEON-specific XMRig project is deprecated; it directs users to XMRig with -a cryptonight-lite. Its cache guidance is specific to that legacy algorithm context—not a universal rule for every current XMRig algorithm.
What does “1 MB L3 cache” mean for AEON XMRig?
The deprecated AEON-specific XMRig repository links thread selection to L3 cache and describes a requirement of 1 or 2 MB per thread depending on the CryptoNight-Lite variation. That is historical, algorithm-specific guidance, not a promise that every CPU with 1 MB of L3 cache per core will run one profitable or optimal mining thread.
Cache topology, algorithm variation, miner build, and CPU configuration affect the result. The repository also includes an Intel i7-6700 example, but those historical example results are not a reliable basis for predicting current performance on different hardware.
Do not apply RandomX cache guidance to AEON
Current XMRig benchmark documentation discusses RandomX variants separately: it associates the Monero variant with 2 MB of CPU cache per thread and the Wownero variant with 1 MB per thread. Those statements apply to those RandomX benchmark variants, not AEON CryptoNight-Lite. Check the algorithm before using a cache figure to choose thread count.

- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure

XMRig’s current CPU configuration documentation says original CryptoNight-Lite is disabled by default. Verify that the specific release or build you intend to run still exposes the algorithm before treating a command as usable. See the benchmark documentation and CPU configuration documentation.
How do I test XMRig in Docker?
Use a controlled comparison rather than assuming a container has a fixed performance penalty. No reliable Docker-versus-host hashrate result is established here. The clearest test uses the same XMRig build and configuration outside and inside Docker, with CPU allocation, frequency behavior, affinity, duration, and thermal conditions held as constant as possible.

- Identify the software and host. Record the XMRig version and build, intended algorithm, CPU model, operating system and kernel, Docker version, and—if using an image—its owner, tag, digest, and build provenance.
- Verify algorithm availability. For the legacy AEON instructions, the algorithm is
cryptonight-lite. Confirm the selected miner binary supports it rather than assuming a current default build enables it. - Choose a trustworthy container source. Check that the image owner and source, release recency, build provenance, and digest match your requirements. The surfaced xmrig/xmrig Docker Hub listing reports an update almost nine years ago; that listing alone does not establish a currently maintained image.
- Establish a host baseline. If possible, run the same miner build and configuration directly on the host first. Record the settings and results before testing in Docker.
- Repeat inside Docker with matched settings. Keep algorithm, miner build, thread count, affinity, CPU frequency behavior, and run duration consistent. Record the container’s CPU limits and permissions as well as relevant host conditions.
- Check performance features. XMRig’s benchmark guidance calls out huge-page status and successful MSR register setup. Record whether each is actually available and active on the host and in the container; do not assume Docker provides either automatically.
- Run repeatable trials. Allow the workload to warm up, measure a sustained period, and repeat runs. Change one variable at a time so any result can be tied to a specific setting.
The older Docker Hub listing includes a basic run example, but its age is a reason to verify image maintenance and provenance rather than copy it as a current default. XMRig’s CPU configuration documentation covers CPU settings, huge pages, and algorithm configuration, and notes that cache and other factors can limit CPU use; a Docker CPU limit alone cannot resolve a cache bottleneck.
How many threads should I use with 1 MB L3 cache?
There is no universal thread count that follows from “1 MB L3 cache.” The AEON repository’s 1-or-2-MB-per-thread guidance depends on the historical CryptoNight-Lite variation it describes. For a given machine, treat candidate thread counts as settings to test, not as a count that can be calculated from a single cache number.

Does Docker reduce XMRig hashrate?
The available evidence does not establish a general Docker hashrate penalty. A difference between host and container runs could reflect CPU limits, affinity, frequency scaling, thermal behavior, permissions, huge-page availability, MSR setup, or differences in the miner build or algorithm—not Docker alone.
Compare the recorded host and container runs before attributing a change to containerization. Keep CPU resources and miner settings matched, and note which performance features succeeded in each environment. XMRig’s CPU configuration documentation identifies cache and other system factors as possible limits, so changing one container setting may not address the cause.

What should a useful benchmark record?
Capture enough detail for another person to understand what was compared. XMRig’s benchmark instructions specifically call for checking huge pages and MSR status; the other fields make the host/container comparison interpretable.
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Miner version/build and algorithm | Distinguishes deprecated AEON CryptoNight-Lite guidance from current XMRig algorithms and configurations. |
| CPU model, cache information, thread count, and affinity | Shows which processor resources were assigned and what cache context applies. |
| OS/kernel, Docker version, CPU limits, and image digest or build provenance | Documents the host and container environment being compared. |
| Huge-page status and MSR setup result | Records whether the performance features XMRig asks users to check were available and successful. |
| Sustained hashrate, run duration, and repeated-run results | Provides more useful evidence than a brief peak and reveals run-to-run variation. |
| Temperature and relevant thermal conditions | Helps identify warm-up, throttling, or changing heat conditions. |
| Accepted and rejected shares, if connected to a pool | Adds pool-side result quality; hashrate alone does not show whether submitted work was accepted. |
| Power draw, if measured | Adds energy-use context. A plug-in electricity monitor can measure whole-system draw, but it is optional and does not measure miner performance by itself. |
How to interpret results responsibly
A sound test changes one factor at a time, repeats runs, and reports the configuration alongside the result. A sustained hashrate comparison is meaningful only when algorithm, miner build, CPU settings, and host conditions are sufficiently matched. If a setting cannot be matched—for example, huge pages or MSR setup—report that difference rather than calling the two runs equivalent.
