The Supermicro X10DRG-Q is a legacy dual-socket server motherboard for Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 processors and accelerator-heavy builds. It offers four PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, 16 ECC DDR4 DIMM slots, and IPMI remote management, but it is a proprietary 15.2 × 13.2-inch board that Supermicro lists as discontinued. Its FAQ also confirms an important limitation: the board does not support x4x4x4x4 PCIe bifurcation. It is best considered for a carefully checked used build or maintaining an existing system, not as a current-generation platform.

What the X10DRG-Q is—and what its EOL status means

The X10DRG-Q, also identified as MBD-X10DRG-Q, is a dual-socket motherboard built for Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors. Its large PCIe layout targets systems with multiple accelerators and other expansion cards. Supermicro’s official product specification states: “Product SKUs – Discontinued SKU (EOL). Please contact sales-rep for replacement SKUs.” That makes the board a legacy option; availability, condition, accessories, and seller return terms need to be checked when buying used.

Supermicro remains the best source for the board’s stated specifications. For detailed slot and lane planning, consult its resource center, which lists manual revision 1.3 and BIOS/BMC resources. Verify the exact board revision and firmware before relying on a particular configuration.

Key specifications

Feature Supermicro’s listed specification
CPU sockets Two Socket R3 (LGA 2011-3) sockets for Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 processors; maximum listed CPU TDP is 160 W per CPU.
Memory 16 288-pin DDR4 ECC DIMM sockets; up to 1 TB ECC RDIMM or 2 TB ECC 3DS LRDIMM. Listed data rates include 1600, 1866, 2133, and 2400 MT/s.
Expansion Four PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, additional PCIe 3.0 x8 connections, and a PCIe 2.0 x4 electrical slot in an x8 physical slot.
Storage 10 SATA 6 Gbps ports; RAID 0/1/5/10 listed.
Networking Two Intel i350 Gigabit Ethernet ports and a dedicated management LAN.
Remote management IPMI 2.0 with KVM-over-LAN and virtual media; ASPEED AST2400 BMC.
Form factor Proprietary; 15.2 × 13.2 inches (38.61 × 33.53 cm).

Memory speed and maximum capacity depend on the installed CPUs and DIMM configuration; the listed maximums are not a guarantee for every population pattern. Supermicro says BIOS 2.0 or newer is needed for its maximum core/cache listing. Check CPU support and firmware details for the actual processors you plan to install.

CPU, memory, and PCIe planning

Both processors matter

The board has two LGA2011-3 sockets for Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 CPUs, with support listed up to 160 W TDP. Supermicro specifies that both CPUs are needed for full access to PCIe slots and onboard controllers. A single-CPU build can therefore leave parts of the expansion layout or onboard functionality unavailable. Before purchasing processors, confirm the exact model, BIOS support, thermal capacity, and cooling arrangement.

DIMM capacity depends on the configuration

There are 16 DDR4 ECC DIMM sockets. The manufacturer lists up to 1 TB with ECC RDIMMs or 2 TB with ECC 3DS LRDIMMs, at supported data rates up to DDR4-2400. Actual capacity and operating speed depend on CPU choice and how memory is populated. Match DIMM type across the configuration and use the manual’s population guidance rather than assuming that every combination reaches the listed maximum.

Slot count is not the whole GPU story

Four PCIe 3.0 x16 slots make the board attractive for accelerator builds, but the physical slot layout, electrical connection, and CPU lane ownership all matter. Supermicro’s slot summary also identifies PCIe 3.0 x8 connections and a PCIe 2.0 x4 electrical connection in an x8 physical slot. Use the manual’s slot/block diagram to check which CPU supplies each slot and how a proposed set of GPUs, network cards, or storage adapters will operate.

GPU support and PCIe bifurcation

Supermicro’s FAQ dated June 18, 2025 addresses whether slots 2, 4, 6, and 8 can be used and changed in BIOS to x4x4x4x4. Its answer says GPUs can be installed in the referenced slots, but the X10 board does not support that x4x4x4x4 split. Do not assume a passive multi-NVMe adapter that depends on x4x4x4x4 bifurcation will work; that is distinct from installing a GPU in a supported slot.

For multi-GPU use, confirm each card’s dimensions, slot spacing, power connectors, and cooling needs, then check the motherboard manual’s lane map and your chassis layout. Slot availability alone does not establish compatibility with every GPU, accelerator, driver, or operating system.

What the historical hands-on review demonstrated

ServeTheHome’s Patrick Kennedy reviewed the board on January 21, 2015, using two Xeon E5-2690 v3 processors, eight 16 GB DDR4-2133 ECC RDIMMs, two Xeon Phi 31S1P cards, two NVIDIA K4000 cards, and a Mellanox ConnectX-3 FDR VPI/40GbE card in a Supermicro SYS-7048GR-TR test bed. The reviewer reported that the spaced slots suited double-width cards and that the Xeon Phi, Quadro, networking, and RAID cards booted in the configurations tried. These results are useful historical evidence, not a compatibility guarantee for every card or a current driver stack.

In that 2015 setup, ServeTheHome reported 44.8°C as the highest observed temperature after a 24-hour full CPU load. This is the review system’s reported observation—not a universal board temperature, a GPU temperature, or a prediction for a different chassis, workload, or cooling arrangement. The reviewer also described remote monitoring, remote power control, and virtual media in the deployment; Supermicro’s specification independently lists IPMI 2.0 and KVM-over-LAN.

Case, cooling, power, and build fit

The proprietary 15.2 × 13.2-inch form factor means the board should not be treated as standard ATX or assumed to fit an ordinary E-ATX case. Supermicro lists the SC747TQ-R1620B among optimized chassis options, and ServeTheHome chose that chassis for its review system. Confirm mounting points and chassis compatibility for the exact board and case before buying.

Also verify narrow-ILM cooler mounting, CPU TDP support, GPU clearance and thickness, card power connectors, PSU capacity, risers, and airflow. A case that can physically mount the motherboard may still lack room or cooling for a multi-card configuration.

Who should consider the X10DRG-Q?

  • Existing-system owners: It may be appropriate for maintaining a working X10DRG-Q system when compatible replacement parts are available.
  • Used-hardware builders: It can suit a legacy dual-Xeon compute build if the board’s EOL status, proprietary dimensions, firmware, CPU pair, memory, chassis, cooling, and GPU topology all fit the plan.
  • Builders needing passive multi-NVMe bifurcation: Avoid assuming this board can split a slot into x4x4x4x4; the manufacturer says it cannot.
  • Buyers seeking a straightforward modern platform: The board’s discontinued status and platform age make it a poor default choice when current firmware support, newer CPU generations, or uncomplicated chassis compatibility are priorities.

There is no comparative benchmark basis here for claiming a performance advantage over another legacy GPU server platform. Compare alternatives by CPU generation and core count, lane ownership, PCIe slot width and spacing, bifurcation support, ECC memory capacity and speed, chassis fit, cooling, remote management, firmware availability, and used-market condition.
