They are not opposing genres: one game can put revenge at the center of its plot and still build play around tactical combat. The useful distinction is narrative emphasis versus gameplay structure—not revenge versus strategy.
What does “revenge-saga RPG” mean?
“Revenge-saga RPG” is best understood as a description of a story’s focus, not a standardized industry genre label. It suggests that revenge motivates the protagonist or shapes the campaign: the player may pursue those responsible, uncover why the conflict began, or decide what justice should mean.
That description alone does not tell you how combat works. It does not establish whether battles are turn-based, action-based, or played on a grid. Those details have to come from the game’s actual mechanics and official description.
What makes a strategy RPG different?
A strategy RPG emphasizes decisions that shape battles. Depending on the game, those decisions can include where to position characters, how to form a party, which abilities to combine, and how to respond to battlefield conditions. The label points toward tactical play, but it does not require one universal combat formula.

Positioning and battle planning
Nintendo’s description of Triangle Strategy highlights character placement before battle as part of its tactical decision-making. That is one example of how a strategy RPG can make preparation and positioning central to combat; it is not a definition that every strategy RPG must follow. Nintendo’s developer insights for Triangle Strategy discuss the game’s approach.
Formations and combinations
Square Enix describes party formation and combo attacks as sources of tactical depth in the SaGa series. These are different strategic levers from positioning, and they show why “strategy RPG” should not be reduced to a single battle layout. Square Enix’s SaGa franchise overview outlines those elements.

How the two ideas overlap
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a clear example of a revenge-driven story that also carries a strategy label. Square Enix identifies it as “RPG, Strategy” and describes the player as the Emperor of Avalon facing the Seven Heroes. It also says that choices—including which objectives to tackle first—shape the campaign’s narrative experience. Revenge supplies the story’s central conflict; the strategy label describes another aspect of the game rather than contradicting that theme. See Square Enix’s game description.
This example also shows why it is inaccurate to assume a revenge story must be linear or that strategy RPGs are necessarily light on story. In Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, the official description connects player choices and objective order with how the narrative unfolds.

How to compare the labels when choosing a game
| Question | Revenge-saga emphasis | Strategy RPG emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| What drives the experience? | A revenge motive or the consequences of pursuing it. | Tactical decisions that affect battles and the wider conflict. |
| What decisions should you look for? | Who or what to pursue, which objectives to tackle, and how choices shape the story. | How to position characters, form a party, use combos, and choose battle actions. |
| What does the label not tell you? | Whether combat is action-based, turn-based, or grid-based. | Whether the story centers on revenge, political conflict, or another theme. |
These are comparison points, not rules that every game in either category must satisfy. Check the specific game’s description and combat mechanics rather than inferring them from a title or story theme.
Why a revenge feature does not determine genre
Disgaea 5 makes the distinction especially clear. NIS America calls it a Strategy RPG and describes a Revenge Gauge that accumulates when allied units take damage or are defeated. Revenge is part of the battle system and the game’s branding, but the official genre label remains Strategy RPG. NIS America explains the Revenge System.

Likewise, a title that evokes revenge does not establish a game’s genre. PlatinumGames labels Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance as “Action,” demonstrating that a revenge-related name can belong to a game described in a different genre. PlatinumGames’ page for the game gives its label.

When you see “revenge-saga RPG,” read it as a clue about the story’s motivation, not a promise about combat. When you see “strategy RPG,” expect tactical choices to matter in play, but do not assume the plot lacks revenge or that every battle uses the same system. The categories can overlap, and the game’s own mechanics and description are the best guide to what you will actually play.
