Give a shy cat a quiet home base, safe places to hide, and time to approach you on its own terms. Keep daily routines predictable, offer treats or play as optional invitations, and open more of the home gradually as the cat becomes comfortable. There is no universal settling-in deadline; follow the individual cat’s cues.
Set up a quiet home base
Start your cat in a small, quiet room rather than giving it the run of an unfamiliar home. Put food, water, a litter box, familiar items, and comfortable hiding places there. Hiding spots at different heights can give the cat choices; ASPCA recommends both low and elevated places for shy cats in its Undercover Cats guidance.
A covered cat hideaway can help, but a safe cardboard box or nook can serve the same purpose. The important thing is that the cat can retreat without being trapped or disturbed.
Let your cat choose when to interact
Spend calm time in or near the room without demanding attention. Sit quietly, read, or go about a gentle activity. Let the cat decide whether to approach, and allow it to withdraw again. ASPCA notes that shy cats generally prefer to interact with people on their own terms.

Do not pull a cat from its hiding place, corner it, or force petting. These actions can remove the cat’s sense of control. Instead, make your presence predictable and give the cat space to observe you.
Offer positive invitations without pressure
Treats can help a cat associate your presence with something pleasant. Place one nearby or offer it when the cat is willing; do not use food to lure it into a situation where it cannot retreat. If the cat shows interest, try a wand toy and let it decide whether to play.

An ASPCA adopter described Hazel as “nosy but very scared to be nosy,” and said she enjoyed treats and wand-toy play while still needing access to a favorite hiding place. That is one cat’s experience, not a guarantee that every shy cat will respond to the same offers.
Open the rest of the home gradually
Keep other rooms closed at first. When your cat appears comfortable in its home-base room, allow it to explore additional areas at its own pace. Leave the way back to its safe space open so it can retreat if it feels overwhelmed.

Before expanding access, make the newly available area safer. ASPCA’s moving guidance advises securing windows, removing poisonous plants and pest-control traps, and blocking spaces where a pet could become stuck.
How long does it take a shy cat to settle in?
There is no evidence-based universal number of days that applies to every cat. ASPCA adoption guidance uses a “3-3-3 Guideline” as a broad rule of thumb, not a validated statistic or deadline for an individual animal. Its adoption stories and profiles describe different experiences, including adjustment after a few days, around three weeks, or several weeks or more. Some cats may also remain shy around guests.

Use those accounts as examples of variation, not a schedule to measure your cat against. Look for signs that your cat is becoming more comfortable in its own way, such as choosing to explore or approach you. A cat that remains timid in some situations is not necessarily failing to settle in.
