An online MMORPG can show both problems at once, so check what changes during the hitch before buying or replacing hardware.
Tell rendering stutter from network lag
Rendering trouble affects how smoothly the game is drawn. A falling FPS counter during a hitch points toward the PC or game. Network trouble is more likely when movement rubber-bands, hits fail to register, responses arrive late, or you disconnect—even if the image looks momentarily jerky. Lost Ark Support lists these as connectivity symptoms, while Nexon America Support notes that server-side lag is also possible.
As Nexon America Support puts it, “Higher ping is worse, the higher it is, the more lag you’ll feel.” Ping is one clue, not a complete diagnosis: check it alongside packet loss and what the game is doing.
Measure what happens during the hitch
Use the game’s FPS display or a hardware monitor you already trust. Record the readings while the issue is happening, rather than relying on what the PC does at the main menu. Nexon recommends assessing FPS alongside CPU, RAM, and GPU use.

- FPS: Does it fall when the image stutters?
- CPU and GPU: Is either close to fully occupied at the same time?
- Memory: Is RAM nearly full?
- Temperatures: Are readings beyond the component manufacturer’s recommendations?
- Context: Does it happen in a crowded area, during combat, or just after entering a new area?
High load, nearly full memory, or excessive heat are clues about what to investigate, not proof that a component needs replacing. Compare temperatures with the guidance for your specific hardware; there is no universal temperature threshold established for every PC.
For symptoms that look network-related, check ping and packet loss while they occur. Nexon cautions that a game server may not respond to the final ping hop, so intermediate readings can still help show whether a problem lies earlier in the route. Also note whether downloads or other high-bandwidth activity are running.

Try reversible PC and game checks
Make one change at a time and retest in a similar in-game situation. The controls available and the best settings vary by game, PC, and launcher; the official support page for your MMORPG should take precedence over examples from another title.
- Reduce demanding graphics options. If performance falls under load, lower settings and test again. View distance and shadows are examples Bohemia Interactive calls out for Arma Reforger, not guaranteed top offenders in every MMO.
- Close unnecessary programs and pause downloads or updates. Background applications and drive-writing tasks can affect performance, according to New World Support.
- Test another display mode. If your game offers full-screen, windowed, or borderless options, switch modes and compare. New World Support lists this as a quick troubleshooting check.
- Check the power setting. On Windows, look for a power profile that may limit performance. Lost Ark and New World support both identify a lower-performance power setting as a possible cause; laptops can also have manufacturer-specific power controls.
- Check graphics drivers and game files. Use the current driver offered by your GPU vendor. If your launcher or platform supports file verification, run it using that service’s instructions. New World and Lost Ark support both include driver and file checks in their performance guidance.
- Investigate heat if readings point that way. Follow the PC or component manufacturer’s advice. A general stutter symptom is not a reason to dismantle a laptop or change voltage settings.
These checks are troubleshooting steps, not promised FPS gains: the cited support guidance does not give a universal improvement figure for any of them.

Check shader guidance for your specific game
Shader preparation can cause stuttering in some titles, but its behavior and controls are game-specific. Square Enix Support Center documents shader-cache creation in Star Ocean: The Divine Force and describes an in-game “Compile Shader” option. Square Enix says compilation in that game may take 35 to 90 minutes depending on PC specifications. That duration and menu option apply to its documented game, not to MMORPGs in general. Consult your game’s official support instructions before waiting, clearing a cache, or changing driver settings.
Use the symptom to choose the next step

When a wired connection is worth testing
Ethernet is a useful diagnostic only when weak Wi-Fi signal or wireless interference could explain network symptoms. Lost Ark Support recommends trying a wired connection in that context. It can remove a wireless variable from the test, but it does not raise rendered FPS by itself. If the FPS counter is dropping without connectivity symptoms, focus on the local performance checks instead.
