If you want a sprawling MMO world to explore while waiting for another game, start with Guild Wars 2 for exploration without a required subscription, The Elder Scrolls Online for more time in Tamriel while you wait for The Elder Scrolls 6, or Throne and Liberty for dynamic open-world encounters and guild activity. There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on the world and play loop you want, as well as your platform and budget.
What is the best MMORPG to play in 2026?
For an exploration-first game with no required recurring subscription, consider Guild Wars 2. For an MMO rooted in the Elder Scrolls setting, ESO is the most direct fit. For newer open-world activities and guild play, look at Throne and Liberty. These are three distinct recommendations, not a definitive ranking: the available sources do not establish a shared review method or an exhaustive comparison of every open-world MMORPG.
Which game fits your play style?
Guild Wars 2: roam, discover, and join events
Guild Wars 2 is a strong match if you want exploration to be part of the main activity loop. PC Gamer describes a world built around discovering points of interest and vistas, taking part in local events and larger meta-events, using mounts, and visiting expansion maps. That gives solo players opportunities to encounter other players and cooperate without making every session depend on a fixed group. See the PC Gamer overview of the game and the official Guild Wars 2 site.
The official site advertises free play and says there is “No subscription fee ever!” This supports free access to the core game, not a claim that every expansion or story chapter is included. Check the current store listing for what is included and what additional content costs.

The Elder Scrolls Online: stay in Tamriel while waiting for The Elder Scrolls 6
ESO is the clearest choice if the release you are waiting for is The Elder Scrolls 6 and you want to spend the time in a familiar fantasy setting. GamesRadar specifically recommends it as a way to make that wait more manageable, pointing to Tamriel regions familiar from earlier games alongside territories added to ESO over time. Its accumulated regions make it a setting-led choice rather than simply another generic open-world MMO. Read GamesRadar’s MMO overview for that comparison.
ESO’s live-service direction is also changing. Bethesda said Season Zero ran from April 2 through July 8, 2026, on PC/Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation, and described gameplay features, improvements, and additions under the seasonal model as free for ESO players. Those dates describe the completed Season Zero schedule; they do not establish when a later season will begin or what it will include. Details are in Bethesda’s Season Zero announcement.

Throne and Liberty: seek open-world encounters and guild activity
Throne and Liberty fits players drawn to dynamic activities, enemies, exploration, and group play in an evolving world. Its official Nix announcement also highlights housing and lifestyle improvements. The announcement says, “Nix was built to encourage players to spend more time out in the world itself.” It is a useful signal of the design emphasis, rather than a guarantee that every player will prefer its activities. See the official Nix announcement.
There is a significant live-service change on the horizon: the publisher announced that western operations are due to transition from Amazon Game Studios to FirstSpark Games/NC starting in Q4 2026. The announcement says accounts, characters, progression, inventory, platforms, and access are intended to continue, and that players will need to accept NC terms. At the time of the announcement, transition downtime details were still to be confirmed in its FAQ. Check the western operations update for final transition information.

What is the best MMORPG for beginners?
There is no supported single best beginner MMO among these three. Choose by what makes it easier for you to keep playing: a world you enjoy exploring, a familiar setting, or social activities you want to join. Guild Wars 2’s events and discovery-oriented map loop can suit someone who wants to explore at their own pace; ESO makes sense if familiarity with Elder Scrolls worlds matters most; Throne and Liberty is worth considering if guild activity and dynamic encounters are the draw. Try the available entry point for your platform and check its current access terms before committing.
What is the best free MMORPG in 2026?
Guild Wars 2 has the clearest source-backed free-access claim in this shortlist: its official site promotes free play and no subscription fee. That does not mean all expansions and story content are free. For ESO and Throne and Liberty, verify the current store terms for your region rather than assuming that an access label covers every edition, add-on, or ongoing cost. A free core game, a limited trial, paid expansions, and a subscription are different kinds of access.

How to compare open-world MMORPGs before you start
| What to compare | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Exploration | Does the game offer map discovery, points of interest, dynamic events, and open-world encounters that appeal to you outside instanced activities? |
| Solo and social play | Do you want to quest alone, cooperate spontaneously with people nearby, or organize around guild events? |
| Access and cost | What is included for free, and do expansions, story content, subscriptions, or trial limits affect the experience you want? Check the live store for your region. |
| Platform | Is the game available on your system, and can you play with friends on their platforms? Bethesda’s Season Zero announcement lists PC/Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation; Throne and Liberty’s transition FAQ names Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox. Confirm current platform and cross-play terms before choosing. |
| Live-service direction | Separate content that has already launched from announced plans. ESO’s Season Zero schedule has ended; Throne and Liberty’s western operations transition is an announced future change, so follow the official notices for updates. |
Are these the only open-world MMORPGs worth playing?
No. This is a focused shortlist supported by the available comparisons and official game updates, not a complete audit of every MMO, regional price, platform entitlement, or player population. It also does not support a reliable population ranking: the Guild Wars 2 site displays “21 Million Players Strong,” but the page does not define the count or give it a date, so it is not a useful current measure of active players.
