The change followed a reconnect issue with XMRig 2.5.1 and arrived shortly before a Monero hard fork the article said was scheduled for April 6, 2018. This is a historical update, not guidance that the old images are suitable for current mining.
What changed in ServeTheHome’s images
ServeTheHome’s March 31, 2018 article said, “Today, the supported images were upgraded to xmrig 2.5.2.” The update replaced the prior XMRig 2.5.1 build after users encountered a reconnect issue. It also changed the image’s underlying software environment and reflected a move toward fewer maintained image variants.

ServeTheHome also reported more than 750,000 mining-container downloads on Docker Hub at the time. That is a historical figure reported in 2018, not a current download count. ServeTheHome’s announcement
Why the announcement mentioned a hard fork
The article connected the planned Monero algorithm change to the arrival of ASIC miners and said Monero’s hard fork was scheduled for April 6, 2018. That was a forward-looking date in the March 31 announcement; it does not describe an upcoming or current fork.

Aeon had a separate upgrade schedule
Aeon’s v7 upgrade was a distinct network event, not the April 6 Monero fork. The Aeon project schedule lists v7 at block 963,500 on June 3, 2018, and recommends Aeon v0.12.9.0-aeon for that upgrade. The project says Aeon uses software-upgrade hard forks, does not follow a fixed hard-fork schedule, and advises users and service providers to check the repository for the appropriate software version. Historical update steps for existing containers
ServeTheHome’s article instructed existing users to stop containers, remove the old image, pull the updated image, and restart their containers. It noted that image removal could fail if a container still used that image, in which case the user might first need to remove the container. These are the article’s 2018 instructions, not a recommendation for managing a current mining setup.

- Stop the container running the old image.
- Remove the old image. If Docker reports that a container is using it, remove that container first, as the historical article advised.
- Pull the updated image.
- Restart the containers using the updated image.

Because the update dates to 2018 and the available listing is not a security or compatibility assessment, the sources do not establish whether these images still run correctly or should be deployed today.
