The feature is now generally available: Microsoft’s release plan lists public preview on February 3, 2025, and general availability on July 31, 2025. It lets administrators transfer an eligible Dataverse environment from a source tenant to a destination tenant, but connected apps, services, and settings may need separate preparation or reconfiguration.
What tenant-to-tenant migration does
The capability is intended for scenarios such as tenant consolidation and acquisitions. It does not physically move an existing environment. Instead, the Dataverse organization becomes managed under a new environment in the destination tenant, and the source environment remains without that organization. See Microsoft’s tenant-to-tenant migration guide.
This is a move between tenants, not a geo-to-geo move within one tenant or a migration of other Microsoft 365 workloads.
Which environments and tenants are eligible?
Microsoft supports only production and sandbox environments that have Dataverse. The following are excluded:

#1 Best Overall
- Default, developer, trial, and Teams environments.
- Migrations between the GCC and public cloud, in either direction.
- A Dataverse organization linked to a finance and operations organization; it cannot be migrated to another tenant.
Confirm eligibility for the specific environment and cloud boundary before planning a move, because an otherwise suitable Dataverse environment may still fall outside these limits.
What to prepare before the move
Destination users, licenses, and mapping
Create the required users in the destination tenant’s Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra ID, assign the necessary licenses, and prepare a user-mapping CSV for each environment. Power Platform or Dynamics 365 administrator privileges are required. The mapping determines which destination users correspond to users in the source environment, so validate it before migration.

Workloads and dependencies
The environment move does not carry every connected component unchanged. Security groups are not migrated, and Microsoft lists Customer Voice, Omnichannel for Customer Service, and component library as unsupported. Connections, gateways, applications, and some settings may need manual preparation or reconfiguration.
- Flows may need to be added to Dataverse solutions.
- Apps may need to be exported.
- Customer connectors, connections, and gateways are not migrated.
- Copilot Studio components may need reconfiguration.
- Power Pages websites require separate handling.
Power Apps, Power Automate, Copilot Studio, Power Pages, and Customer Insights have workload-specific procedures in Microsoft’s migration guide. Review the instructions for the workloads in use rather than assuming an environment move alone will leave them ready to run.

Test and schedule
Microsoft recommends testing with a sandbox copy before moving production. Plan an operational window: the migration guide says duration depends on the number of users in the mapping file and advises allowing up to 24 hours. Treat that as planning guidance, not a guaranteed completion time.
How the migration request and move work
- Source administrator: Submit a migration request to the destination tenant through the Power Platform admin center or PowerShell.
- Destination administrator: Approve or reject the request.
- Source administrator: Upload the prepared mapping CSV and validate the mapping after approval.
- Administrators: Start the environment move in the admin center or use the documented PowerShell workflow.
- After the move: Verify access, roles, security groups, settings, and dependent workloads before deleting the orphan source environment.
Microsoft documents PowerShell commands for request submission, approval, validation, status checks, and migration in its procedural guide.

What to verify after migration
Check that the destination users have the expected access and roles, then review security groups, environment settings, and dependent workloads. Some settings do not copy, and security groups must be handled separately.
If an administrator who was not mapped or assigned the System Administrator role opens the destination environment and sees what looks like an empty environment, Microsoft warns that this can be a permissions issue rather than data loss. Check the administrator’s mapping and role before drawing conclusions.

Is this the right migration path?
Use the following checks to assess a proposed move:
- Eligibility: Is this a production or sandbox Dataverse environment, and is the source-to-destination cloud combination supported?
- Workload fit: Are unsupported components absent, or is there a workable plan for components that require separate handling?
- Readiness: Are destination users, licenses, and the mapping file prepared and validated?
- Operations: Can the organization accommodate a migration window that may extend up to 24 hours?
- Follow-up: Is there time to reconfigure connections, security groups, settings, and workload dependencies before retiring the source environment?
