If your slides move on before you finish speaking, check whether they are set to advance automatically. If they wait for you but the audience still cannot keep up, the problem is more likely slide density, sequencing, or the match between your explanation and what is on screen. AI can assemble a polished-looking deck, but it cannot decide for you what this audience needs to see or how long your explanation will take.

First, find out what “outpace” means

There are two different problems that can feel the same from the lectern:

  • The slide changes by itself. A saved automatic timing is advancing the deck, whether or not you have finished speaking.
  • The slide stays up, but the audience falls behind. There may be too much to read, too many ideas to explain at once, or a complex visual that needs more attention than the talk allows.

Fix the first with presentation controls. Fix the second by editing the content and rehearsing the actual talk. A generated deck is a starting point, not proof that the material fits your audience, purpose, or speaking time.

Why are my PowerPoint slides moving faster than I can present?

PowerPoint can advance a slide on a click, after a set interval, or using both controls. The setting is under Transitions > Advance Slide. Choose the slide or slides you want to check, then inspect the click and After options. For a live talk where you need to explain, pause, or take questions, turn off the automatic interval and advance when you are ready. Microsoft notes that an automatic timer starts after the slide’s final animation or effect finishes; transition duration and how long a slide remains visible are separate settings. See Microsoft’s instructions for transition timing.

Logitech Wireless Presenter R400 USB A PowerPoint Clicker with Laser
  • Presenter mode, built-in Class 2 red laser pointer for presentations, intuitive touch-keys for easy slideshow control. AAA batteries required (best with Polaroid AAA batteries)
  • Bright red laser light - Easy to see against most backgrounds, works as a pointer clicker for presentation and clicker for powerpoint presentations
  • Up to 50-foot wireless range for freedom to move around the room
  • There's no software to install. Just plug the receiver into a USB port to begin. This power point clicker wireless solution makes presentations easy, and you can store the receiver in the presentation remote after use.
  • 2.4GHz RF wireless technology, built-in docking bay stores receiver for easy pack up and portability; works well as a presenter clicker wireless or computer clicker for presentations.

Check the whole deck rather than assuming every slide has the same setting. PowerPoint lets you configure selected slides and apply settings across a deck, so verify the result slide by slide when timing matters.

When automatic timing is appropriate

Fixed timings can work for an unattended display or a carefully rehearsed narration. They are a poor fit for a live speaker who may pause, answer a question, or explain a point differently than planned: a fixed timer cannot respond to those changes.

How to advance manually

During delivery, PowerPoint supports keyboard and mouse controls for advancing, going back, and jumping to a particular slide. See Microsoft’s slide navigation instructions. A presentation remote is an optional convenience if you want to control slides away from the computer; it does not solve dense content or rushed delivery.

Choose a delivery method that fits the talk

Delivery method Best fit Trade-off
Manual advancement Live talks with questions, discussion, or variable explanation The presenter must manage the controls and rehearse transitions.
Fixed automatic timings Kiosks, unattended displays, or carefully timed narration A timer cannot adapt to an unplanned pause or question.
Narrated recording or video Asynchronous viewing with a controlled runtime Viewers have less opportunity to interrupt or redirect the presentation.
Reference deck designed to be read Material the audience will consult after the talk Dense slides can compete with spoken explanation; a separate handout may serve the audience better.

PowerPoint includes options for speaker-led presentations, individual browsing, and kiosk playback, as well as tools to rehearse and save timings. Those features support different delivery modes; saved timings do not make a live presentation responsive to the room. Microsoft explains the options in its guide to creating a self-running presentation.

When the slide waits but the audience still falls behind

Extra seconds alone will not fix a slide that asks people to read a paragraph while listening to the same information. Slide-design guidance warns that dense, full-sentence text competes with spoken delivery and can force attention to shift between reading and listening. The right pace depends on the topic, the audience’s familiarity, language, and the visual itself; there is no reliable universal seconds-per-slide rule. See Ten simple rules for effective presentation slides and the discussion of attention in Help us focus, please!.

  • Remove material that does not support the slide’s spoken point.
  • Split a slide when separate claims each need explanation.
  • Move useful but nonessential detail into speaker notes or a post-talk handout.
  • For a complex chart or image, state the takeaway, identify the relevant part, and give the audience time to connect it to your explanation.

Microsoft Speaker Coach recommends 100–165 words per minute, attributing that range to a field study and earlier academic work. Treat it as a coaching recommendation, not a universal speaking-speed threshold. The tool also suggests taking a breath before a new slide or section; a pause can help the transition feel deliberate rather than rushed. See Microsoft’s Speaker Coach suggestions.

How to repair an overstuffed generated deck

  1. Define the audience and outcome. Decide what the audience needs to understand, decide, or do. Do not assume every point in the source material belongs in the talk.
  2. Write one spoken takeaway per slide. In a short sentence, state what listeners should understand after the explanation. If the slide needs several distinct takeaways, split it or reconsider the format.
  3. Separate what listeners see from what you say. Keep on-screen text concise enough to support the explanation. Put background detail in notes or a handout rather than asking people to read a paragraph while you speak.
  4. Choose the delivery mode. Use manual control for a live talk that may include pauses or questions. Use fixed timings for a self-running deck only after checking them against the narration and the intended time to read each slide.
  5. Rehearse aloud with the final slides. Include pauses and transitions. If you have to rush, remove material, simplify the slide, or allocate more time. PowerPoint can record timings and display them in Slide Sorter view.
  6. Test the actual setup. Before the audience arrives, check the display, Presenter View, animations, keyboard or remote controls, and any embedded video. A feature working on one setup does not guarantee it will behave the same way in every room or on every device.

Make slide pacing accessible

Pacing also affects people who cannot rely on visual content alone. Microsoft recommends unique, descriptive slide titles, a logical reading order, sufficient contrast, readable type, and using PowerPoint’s Accessibility Checker. When a graph, image, color, or spatial arrangement carries meaning, explain that information aloud rather than leaving it available only on screen. See Microsoft’s PowerPoint accessibility guidance.

A 2021 study of 90 presentation videos found that 72% of 610 visual elements were insufficiently described. In that study, participants using the researchers’ system described more slide content and identified 3.26 times more accessibility problems to fix than participants using a traditional interface. These are results from that study, not population-wide rates; the abstract is available in Say It All: Feedback for Improving Non-Visual Presentation Accessibility.
