First, identify which text you want to change
“Font color” can mean home-screen labels, text across Android’s interface, text in one app, or text in a distraction-free reading view. These are controlled in different places. Google’s Android Help says you can “change the color scheme of some screens and apps,” not every screen and app. Menu names and options also vary by Android version and device manufacturer.
- Home-screen labels or supported system screens: try Wallpaper & style, while keeping in mind that it changes a supported palette rather than providing a universal font-color picker.
- Text in one app: check the app’s own Theme or Display settings.
- Text that is hard to see: use accessibility options such as bold text or high-contrast text.
- A supported article: use Google Reading mode to choose a color theme for its reading view.
Change the supported system color palette
- Open Settings > Wallpaper & style.
- Choose Wallpaper colors to use a palette based on your wallpaper, or Basic colors to select a basic palette.
This changes the color scheme for supported parts of the device; it does not guarantee that every foreground text element or app will change. Google’s instructions note that some steps apply only to Android 13 and later. If the path is different on your phone, search Settings for “Wallpaper & style.”
Use dark theme for a different overall appearance
- Open Settings > Display > Dark theme.
- Turn Dark theme on or off.
Dark theme changes the interface theme, not a font hue you choose. It does not work in every app: an app may not support it, may opt out, or may have a separate Theme or Display setting. On some phones, Battery Saver can turn dark theme on automatically. If only one app remains light, check that app’s settings.

Make text easier to see with accessibility settings
These controls target text size, weight, or visibility; they are not all font-color selectors.
- Font size: search Settings for “Font size” and adjust the slider. The change does not apply to some apps.
- Bold text: turn it on if heavier lettering is easier for you to read.
- High-contrast text: Google recommends this option on Android 15 and earlier for text visibility.
- Outline text: available on Android 16 and later.
- Color inversion: changes colors across the screen, including media, so photos and other content can look different too.
- Color correction: helps compensate for color-vision differences and is not supported on every device.
Settings labels and availability can differ by phone. If you do not see an option, search Settings for its name or consult your device maker’s help.

Choose text colors in Google Reading mode
Google Reading mode is the closest built-in Google option for choosing text colors, but it changes the reading presentation rather than the underlying content. It requires an Android 9 or later phone.
- Install Reading mode from Google Play and follow its setup to enable the Accessibility shortcut.
- Open a supported long article and activate Reading mode using the shortcut you configured.
- Open Reading mode settings and choose a color theme; you can also adjust font size, font type, bold text, and line spacing.
Reading mode does not currently support PDFs, email, chat messages, or social feeds. Google describes the feature as a way to “personalize your screen reading experience on Android.”

Check the app or home screen for its own controls
For text inside a particular app, start with that app’s settings and look for Theme or Display. The available choices depend on the app, and a system palette or dark theme may not override them.
On Pixel phones, Wallpaper & style includes home-screen fonts, icons, shapes, and colors. Those Pixel controls are device-specific; they are not universal Android settings and do not guarantee that text inside apps will be recolored.

Keep contrast in mind when choosing colors
Google’s Android Accessibility Help cites W3C recommendations of at least 4.5:1 contrast for small text and 3.0:1 for large text. These are design recommendations, not values you need to enter in Android settings. Contrast describes the luminance difference between neighboring colors. Transparency, font smoothing, and anti-aliasing can affect how colors and text appear, so a color combination that looks distinct in a picker may be harder to read on screen.

If the setting you want is missing
- Use Settings search for the feature name, since manufacturers may move or rename menu items.
- Check whether the control applies to the system, the home screen, a particular app, or only Reading mode.
- For app text, look in that app’s Theme or Display settings rather than assuming a system setting will reach it.
- When asking for device-specific help, include your Android version, device maker and model, and the app or screen whose text you want to change.
